Drew Attorney Doesn't Want Megan Meier Parents to Testify in Sentencing Phase

6:25 PM Sat, May 16, 2009 |

Sentencing is scheduled for Monday (May 18th) in Los Angeles in the "MySpace Suicide Case". We interviewed Tina Meier on Saturday afternoon. Her daughter, Megan, committed suicide in 2006 after being harassed and bullied on-line. Lori Drew was convicted of misdemeanors in the case.

A pre-sentence investigation recommends one year of probation and a $5,000 fine. Meier would like to see the maxiumum--three years prison time. The defense attorney in the case wants to block Megan's parents from testifying before the sentencing. The defense argues that the victim in this case is "MySpace."

Meier says she has no indication which way the judge will rule when it comes to allowing her to speak. She may not find out until she's in the courtroom on Monday afternoon. The sentencing is scheduled for 2pm California time so it will be 4pm in St. Louis. News 4 will continue to follow the case and bring you the judge's sentence on Monday.

I absolutely agree. The way the case was presented, it was not case based on what did or did not happen to Megan Meier. It was a case of unauthorized access to a computer....and a weak case at that. Any case Tina Meier has would be a civil case, and then she would be subjecting herself to questioning on her actions leading up to her daughter's death and whether there was neglect on her part involved.

Well, as an adult she should know that making a fake account was wrong and in another way illegal. So they should be allowed to put whom ever on they feel prudent to the case on the stand. If she wouldn't have tried to be a bully at her age, she wouldn't be in this much troble. 14 is an uneasy age in every aspect. Being ganged up on is dishearting when a an adult does it.

I know the charges are not for Megan Meier hanging herself but this adult woman used a computer to harrass a child and I think she should get the 3 years in prison, a life has been lost no matter how you look at it and probation and a fine would be a slap on the wrist for this insensitive witch!!

I think Lori Drew should get the max sentence set by law...because no matter what...she is a so-called adult and she knew what she was doing was wrong, before creating the the ficticious myspace account and set it up to purposely intimidate, or harrass a child....which ultimately lead to this child's death. I understand she was only breaking TOS rules, but for an adult to do it deliberabately to harrass a child, is inexcusable. I pray that the Meiers family will be able to put Megans death behind them when this trial is over, and be able to mourn her death in private.
