We may not be at risk of "cybergeddon" anytime soon, but a computer crimes expert at the FBI, says cyber attacks pose the greatest threat to the United States, after nuclear war and weapons of mass destruction. During the campaign, President Obama pledged to make cybersecurity a "top priority." Later this week, President Obama is expected to announce that he will create a "cyber czar," according to an article in the Washington Post. The person in that post will have broad authority to develop strategy to protect the nation's government-run and private computer networks. It's widely believed that terrorist groups are aiming to accomplish an online 9/11 that would inflict the same damage to our country as they did in 2001 by flying planes into buildings. The cyber czar would help set policy and coordinate strategy to protect government and private computer networks from such a catastrophic attack. I talked more about risks from cyber attacks and the cyber soldiers based in the St. Louis area, in a previous blog. |
