St. Louisans React to Austin Mayoral Candidate's Ad

5:42 PM Thu, Apr 30, 2009 |

You know how you can talk bad about your family but nobody else better? That's kind of what I'm thinking about the Brewster McCracken's political ad. In a nutshell, he says St. Louis was a big deal in 1904 but it isn't now and if Austin doesn't be careful and proactive, the same thing could happen in Austin. Well, isn't that special. The first tendency is to say Brewster who??? But a couple of people I talked to today had another response....

Recovering from probable H1N1 (swine flu) case

5:21 PM Thu, Apr 30, 2009 |

Michael Hairsine has no idea how it happened. He hadn't been to Mexico. He's just been living the life of a typical college sophomore at Loyal University in Chicago. But according to his doctor he's likely got H1N1.

After feeling allergy symptoms Saturday he woke up Sunday in a bad way. Pounding headache, chills, cough, chest pains. He went to a doctor on campus who told him to go to the ER. A doctor there put him on Tamiflu and ...

Local Student May Have Swine Flu

11:01 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

20 year old Michael Hairsine is currently under voluntary quarantine in Ellisville, Missouri after doctors discovered he may have the Swine Flu. I spoke to him tonight on the phone and he told me that he's in shock. Hairsine attends Loyola University in Chicago and says that he started feeling ill this weekend. "On Saturday I started having seasonal allergy symptoms. By the next morning, I woke up and I felt like a train wreck. I...

Swine Flu and Kids

10:43 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

Perhaps the most alarming aspect to this Swine Flu situation is something I heard in an emergency room today. And that was a doctor telling me it seems that it is inevitiable that the virus will hit here at some point.
That can be scarey, but it's important to keep in mind that doctors say this appears to be similar to other flu outbreaks and that using an ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure. Wash hand...

Brewster McCracken Bashes St. Louis! So Who's Brewster McCracken?

9:04 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

A guy named Brewster McCracken is running to be the next mayor of Austin, Texas - and he doesn't seem to like St. Louis. A friend of mine sent me an email from Austin alerting me to a political video McCracken created for his campaign. Here's the deal, McCracken talks about St. Louis as a city that's lost its luster over the last century, and if he's not elected mayor, Austin could suffer a similar fate. McCracken says St. Louis was a great ci...

Monsanto "overreacting" to swine flu

6:46 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

"Overreacting" is in quotes because I didn't use that word... A Monsanto public affairs person did.

Here's why...

Monsanto, which sends employees all over the world, is requiring any employee who's been to Mexico in the past week or so for business or pleasure, to stay away from the office for seven days after they get home.

Of the 4,000 Monsanto employees in the St. Louis area so far less than ten fit in that category....

President Obama Visits Arnold

5:46 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

President Obama held his town hall meeting today at Fox School in Arnold. It wasn't a lengthy visit but it was exciting for the school. He had a prepared speech and then took questions from the audience. He joked they would go boy/girl boy/girl.... and he did.
He picked people at random, not knowing their questions. None was particularly pointed or confrontational and he gave pretty standard answers. Not "bad" answers, just familiar...

Swine Flu Scams?! You've Got to be Kidding Me...

4:24 PM Wed, Apr 29, 2009 |

As it turns out, swine flu is a money-making opportunity for some. Last night, I covered a story about a local company preparing to make life-saving equipment for the government (if the flu becomes a pandemic). What I'm talking about today is completely different.

I'm talking about people who are either trying to scam you or sell you something you really don't need.

The Better Business Bureau sends us a lot of information (al...

Company on the Hill Part of Swine Flu Preps

10:36 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |

this is an angle to the swine flu story that I certainly haven't seen until today.

A local company that manufactures healthcare equipment is now preparing to supply the government with portable ventilators in case of a healthcare crisis.

Allied Healthcare Products has been in business on the Hill in St. Louis for decades, manufacturing equipment for hospitals. Their national sales manage...

Missouri Attorney General Has Harsh Words For U.S. Fidelis

7:32 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |

Watch extended interview

Today we sat down with the Missouri Attorney General, he talked about the lawsuit against Wentzville based U.S. Fidelis. The company sells extended auto warranties, today Chris Koster said the company has used misleading sales tactics to lure consumers. We asked Koster if Missouri residents should do business with Fidel...

Another domestic violence death

4:23 PM Tue, Apr 28, 2009 |

When Illinois State Police and O'Fallon Police called a Tuesday afternoon news conference about Monday night's apparent murder and killer getting shot by police I was anticipating some unusual circumstance that would blow my mind.

Turns out there was no such detail. Sadly, what happened at an O'Fallon apartment complex was all too familiar. A husband shoots and kills his wife. Then he calls police and gets them to shoot and kill him...

Goodbye Pontiac

10:44 PM Mon, Apr 27, 2009 |

I'm sure a good number of people will be at least a little sad to see the Pontiac name disappear. The GM division that set itself apart with the now classic "muscle cars" is now left to our automotive history.
But there is a group for Pontiac lovers here in St. Louis.
The Arch Chapter of the Pontiac-Oakland Club International is devoted to restoring and preseving that rich history.
Anyone intereste...

Doctor says to Keep Up-to-Date on Swine Flu Coverage

9:08 PM Mon, Apr 27, 2009 |

We sat down tonight with Dr. Steven Lawrence from Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He's an infectious disease expert. We had several questions about swine flu that viewers had emailed us. They were all good questions.

One thing that's important right now is that everybody be kept up-to-date on what's going on with this swine flu outbreak. The doctor said that the situation is going to be changing rapidly as more is found out about this stra...

Nazis, Jim Morrison and The F Word

10:03 AM Mon, Apr 27, 2009 |

Remember when Jim Morrison and The Doors sang, "People Are Strange"?

I was thinking about those lyrics the other day.

I covered the rally at the Archgrounds last week with the National Socialist Movement. The NSM is the largest neo-nazi organization in the United States. About 100 nazis gathered to rally on the Archgrounds. Dozens of people came out to protest their appearance. The day consisted mainly of insults hurled bac...

Friends Turn Out to Remember a Life Too Short

10:07 PM Sun, Apr 26, 2009 |

We're just now leaving a vigil just south of Cahokia for 13-year-old Ryan Hennemann. He was killed yestercday when the bed of a dumptruck collapsed on him.

His was a life cut way too short. But he touched a lot of people. More than 100 friends turned out tonight for this candlelight vigil. There were a few things that stood out. It wasn't organized by an adult, but rather one of Ryan's friends, a 17-year-old. The friend said he w...

How To Spot A Scam

1:03 AM Sun, Apr 26, 2009 |

Take a look at this email from a News 4 viewer and I'll show you the obvious signs that this is a scam. The email is supposedly from the FBI and says the recipient is to be given $10 million. It was forwarded to us by a viewer who thought others should see it to avoid this or similar scams. Here are the first two sentences.

We the Federal bureau of investigation (FB...

Dump Truck Accident Kills 13-Year-Old Boy in Metro-East

8:47 PM Sat, Apr 25, 2009 |

A metro-East family is dealing with heartbreak. A 13-year-old out riding his bike with his friend thought he'd earn a few bucks. A guy was driving an older-model dump truck filled with gravel. but the load was uneven. The driver asked the boys to help him even it out. He would pay them for their help.

The Sheriff's department says the driver "did something" to the hydraulics on the truck. As the 13-year-old stood next to the tr...

Could Illinois be the Next State to OK Medical Marijuana?

9:41 PM Fri, Apr 24, 2009 |

Former Prosecutor Backs the Idea
A man who once prosecuted marijuana cases is now writing legislation that would make it legal for some to obtain marijuana for medical purposes. Bill Haine was a State's Attorney for 14 years. The democrat from Alton is sponsoring Senate Bill 1382 which would establish a pilot program allowing medical marijuana use.

There is Opposition
I talked to a spokes...

St. Louis Police Chief says He's Committed to Clean Up Department

8:16 PM Fri, Apr 24, 2009 |

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom says he's going to continue to make it clear that under his leadership the department is "fully committed to uncovering and thoroughly inestigatng improprieties or any appearance of improprieties" by the people in his department.

The latest? A former police officer who retired and was most recently working as a civilian employee at the department is accused of ripping off money. But what may mak...

Home Prices Down in St. Louis County

5:45 PM Fri, Apr 24, 2009 |

I did a story today on the fact that home prices are down 19% in St. Louis County. I talked to a man who moved into his brand new home 32 years ago. His three children grew up in that home, and now the last one is graduating college and moving out. With mixed emotions, he's selling to downsize. He probably won't, but he and his wife considered being pretty mobile and wintering down south and summering up north.
It made me think of ...

Uncertainly abounds at Chrysler's Fenton plant

4:31 PM Fri, Apr 24, 2009 |

Seems next week Chrysler will file for bankruptcy. What does that mean for the last remaining shift at Chrysler's truck plant in Fenton? That's the scary part. We don't really know.

While Chapter 11 appears to be imminent, Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock told me today what he told me several months ago... "Bankruptcy is the least desireable option."

What happens to the workers, their pensions, their health benefits? For now, i...

Stimulus Money for Tax Cuts?

9:26 PM Thu, Apr 23, 2009 |

The Missouri Legislature is looking at ways to spend federal stimulus money - promised to the state. One new idea is to give about a billion of it back to you in the form of a state income tax cut over two years.

This idea was made public Thursday morning when House Speaker Ron Richard, a Republican from Joplin, said that one billion dollars in federal stimulus dollars promised to Missouri should go back to tax payers.

Initial...

Store employee makes an impression

8:11 PM Thu, Apr 23, 2009 |

We were at the Best Buy in Brentwood shooting a story about President Obama's desire to give credit card users greater protection from credit card companies.

We needed some video of people using credit cards and some comments from a few of them (and Best Buy is about as media friendly as it gets when it comes to letting TV crews go into a store with our camera and pretty much do what we need to do without hassle. Target comes in secon...

Police Secretive About Excavation

5:30 PM Thu, Apr 23, 2009 |

Everybody knows where St. Louis County Police are digging in Ste. Genevieve County, but few know what they are looking for. They will only say that they are looking for evidence in a previous crime in St. Louis County.
Talking to people in this area, we have learned a lot of information about possibly connected details, but without police confirmation, those details will not be reported.
So... we wait for the official word.

Clayton Bank Robbery

10:21 PM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |

Couple of notes on this robbery at the Bank of America on March 26.
Police tell me this looks like a well rehersed robbery with two men coming in loud and ordering people down and immediately going for the cash drawers and leaving in under 2 minutes to a waiting getaway car.
So far police and the FBI are neither confirming or denying this group has done other robberies, most notably a Commerce Bank robber...

Forget Retirement, I'm Looking for Work!!!

9:24 PM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |

My coworker, Vickie Newton, is getting a ton of e-mails lately. She's been working on a series of stories called Ready to Work.

In each story, she profiles a local job seeker in hopes of giving him or her some exposure to potential employers.

There seem to be a lot of e-mails from people who were counting on retiring in a few years and are instead...

Metro East community comes together for laid off workers

9:01 PM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |

Among the 2,500 steelworkers in Granite City, Illinois laid off late last year are some who are about to lose their health insurance benefits in a couple of months.

Recognizing the devastating circumstances for some families, the Granite City Rotary Club and local businesses got together to host a party Wednesday night to raise money for the laid off workers.

The businesses say the city was built around the steel industry and w...

GM could idle plants up to nine weeks

8:30 PM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |

The news about GM came down around 4:00 on Wednesday. We are told that GM will idle most its plants for nine weeks. This news sent my photographer and I to Wentzville where a GM plant has become a fixture in that community. Once there we found it difficult to get a GM worker to talk to us. However, we did talk with the Mayor of Wentzville. He tells us he's not surprised by the news. In fact, the city of Wentzville has cut back in several areas...

School Plagued By Fights

5:37 PM Wed, Apr 22, 2009 |

Imagine College Prep is a high school in its first year of operation in St. Louis. Imagine Schools educate about 37 thousand charter school students across the country, including at 3 other Imagine charter schools in STL.
There was a fight there that left 5 injured, including a student who was stabbed in the stomach with a pencil by another student, and a police officer who was injured when he fell while running after someone. Two juven...

New Life for the Bevo Mill?

11:19 PM Tue, Apr 21, 2009 |

A month ago, the Bevo Mill closed its doors suddenly leaving some people who'd put down deposits for weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other celebrations without a venue.

I remember I interviewed one bride-to-be who put down nearly $6,000 in deposits for her rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception! Her family paid by check and that money was gone. She scrambled to find a new place to get married and was faced with finding a way to ...

This dog needs help

8:37 PM Tue, Apr 21, 2009 |

We got a call this afternoon from a frustrated St. Louis Resident. This gentleman called several agencies to get a dog some help. Here is the background on the story.

Some people were hanging out in an abandon home on the 1300 block of Semple. Residents called the city to complain, and in return crews boarded the home up. However, there would be one big problem.

A dog got trapped in the abandoned home. Residents called the pol...

Missouri AG Investigating Contractor - AGAIN!

8:30 PM Tue, Apr 21, 2009 |

The Missouri Attorney General is investigating Jeffrey Wolfson again - and the Better Business Bureau has a warning about Wolfson. According to the BBB Wolfson owns Home Centers America, despite the fact that the Missouri Attorney General banned Wolfson from owning a home remodeling business. This all goes back to problems in Wolfson's past. The AG says Wolfson ripped off customers when he owned Wolfson Construction. He was sentenced to priso...

Cards softball field delayed two more weeks

8:14 PM Tue, Apr 21, 2009 |

Three weeks ago I told you how the temporary softball field being built in the Ballpark Village space was delayed a few weeks because of rainy weather. Cards President Bill DeWitt III assured me it would be ready by the second homestand, which started tonight.

I was over there today and it's still a muddy mess. However the cement has been poured for the dugouts. A Cardinals representative told me by phone today, it's still been too ...

New Archbishop for St. Louis

6:40 PM Tue, Apr 21, 2009 |

Robert J. Carlson is the Archbishop-elect of the St. Louis Archdiocese. I attended a press conference with him today. He was very comfortable taking control, and very gentle in his remarks. There are many challenges facing him and it will be interesting to see how he is received and how he performs in this most important position. We put the entire press conference on the web if you'd like to see for yourself.

Today, I met the real-life couple behind a photo originally featured on April 10th in a special section of the Post-Dispatch. The photo accompanied a feature titled, "The 7 Best Places to Smooch!"

You can read the article and a few of the original published comments here.

Kirkwood "Forgotten Victim" is Laid Off

8:43 PM Mon, Apr 20, 2009 |

Todd Smith spent the last two and a half years working for the Suburban Journals. Smith told me in an exclusive interview today that he was laid off from Lee Enterprises, the parent company of both the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the Suburban Journals last week. You may remember that Smith is one of the victims of the Kirkwood City Hall shooting on February 7th, 2008. In fact, he was the only person to be shot to survive. Smith was s...

Bizarre Bus Robbery

8:41 PM Mon, Apr 20, 2009 |

St. Louis Police are investigating a bizarre bus robbery. On Sunday morning around 12:30 a metro driver pulled over along the 5900 block of West Florissant - near Calvary Cemetary. According to police reports, a man boarded the bus and pulled out a gun. The driver was ordered to the back of the bus along with the five passengers. A second robber then got on the bus, and joined a third robber who was already on board. Together the three robbers...

Warning if You Have an Older Cell Phone

6:48 PM Mon, Apr 20, 2009 |

Own a cell phone?

Probably.

We are a cell-phone nation.

Let me rephrase that---we are a cell-phone world. Just two years ago the number of cell phones sold in the world topped one billion for the year the number is growing every day.

We talked with a woman today in Overland who bought an older model cell phone (she said her Blackberry was "too much phone") that she found on Ebay. The...

Stimulus Money for Summer Jobs

5:30 PM Mon, Apr 20, 2009 |

Some changes in how the city's summer jobs program will work, thanks to an influx of 3.1 million dollars in simulus money. Instead of a few hundred jobs, there will be 16 hundred jobs. Plus, there will be job training and follow up. The agency which is running the program, SLATE, is very excited about the changes. City Hall is encouraged that some young people who might never have held a job may soon not only have an income, although tempo...

Update: St. Charles Police Stand-Off Ends with Surrender

9:18 PM Sun, Apr 19, 2009 |

A stand-off in St. Charles has now ended. A man was holed-up in side his trailer house for several hours.

Police got the call shortly after noon of a man with a gun. He'd had a confrontation with a neighbor and fired the gun into the air. He retreated inside the house and when police arrived their negotiations with him went nowhere. Meanwhile the streets around the house were shut down and people couldn't go in or out of th...

The Nazis Rally

9:12 PM Sat, Apr 18, 2009 |

The members of the National Socialist Movement had their rally under the Arch today. They are members of the largest and most active Nazi party in the United States. Their ideas are on the fringe of society, there's little dispute there.

But if you want a good example of what a great country you live in, just look at today's gathering. Their speech and ideas were not welcomed by most of the people who were present but they w...

NSM Rally in St. Louis

10:10 PM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |

As the National Socialist Movement holds its rally in St Louis it's bound to stir a wide range of emotions in people.
I must say however that I was impressed with many of the people I spoke with under the arch Friday night who spoke about the rally of a group that openly endorses rights for "whites only". It's difficult, I realize for people to hold their emotions in check while talking about a group or movement they d...

The Moonrise Hotel now Open for Business on The Loop

9:24 PM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |

How's this for good economic news? The Moonrise Hotel is now open on The Loop. It's another one of Joe Edwards' multi-million dollar projects. The hotel costs $23.5 million to build.

We've been hit with bad news concerning the economy for so long now I'll admit it is nice to cover something positive. We got a tour of the Moonrise today. One thing that most St. Louisans will probably appreciate is the nod to St. Louis. The ten s...

No more income tax? Missouri voters COULD decide

8:27 PM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |

Missouri lawmakers COULD put a measure on the ballot next year that would let voters decided to get rid of the state income tax. We've been paying it since 1917.

To make up for the lost state revenue, the sales tax would be raised .885% to 5.11% and the sales tax would be applied to goods and services that currently aren't taxed... like groceries.

At this point it's hard to tell if this would be good for Missouri taxpay...

Calls From Bank May be a Scam

4:17 PM Fri, Apr 17, 2009 |

Starting Thursday, our newsroom started getting calls from viewers in the Eureka area. They tell us they are getting phone calls from an local bank asking for personal information. Turns out, the calls have nothing to do with the bank. It's a phishing scam.

If you get one of these calls, be on guard. Usually, a recording will tell you that there is a problem with your account or that it's been compromised. The recordings direct yo...

Walking the journalistic tight rope

8:50 PM Thu, Apr 16, 2009 |

I got handed a story today I wish I had white gloves for. I felt the need to handle it very delicately.

I deal with controversies all the time, but this one was tough because pretty much everyone involved had only the best intentions.

The Better Business Bureau is crtiical of a legitimate, local charity called the Foundation for Children with Cancer. The organization helps families who have kids with cancer pay their mortgage...

Pizza Workers Fired After You Tube Stunt

6:02 PM Thu, Apr 16, 2009 |

It's gross. If you've seen the video of the pizza worker putting ingredients in his nose (and elsewhere) and then putting them on sandwiches you know what I mean. It is everyone's nightmare. Do you file it under "it happens, but not to me"... or "I just don't want to know"?
There's another issue, too. Two stupid workers can do serious damage to an employers reputation given the immediacy of the internet. It's sad, gross, and just no...

Senator: You should pay to go to the Zoo

9:52 PM Wed, Apr 15, 2009 |

Senator Joan Bray of University City is sponsoring a bill that would give the Zoo Museum Board the option of charging people who do not live in St. Louis City or County an entrance fee. I spoke to Senator Bray on the phone today and she told me it is not fair that the people who live in St. Louis City and County pay taxes towards the Zoo while everyone, no matter where you live, can access it for free.

I called the Zoo Museum...

Tea Party Talk-Back Continues...

9:21 PM Wed, Apr 15, 2009 |

There have been a lot of comments in the last 24 hours. Feel free to continue. I've read every single comment and I think many others are following the discussion as well. That's why we have this forum.

St. Louis saw a local tea party protest Wednesday and organizers say they are planning another for July 4th.

The demonstration yesterday drew a much larger crowd than the last tea party, held on February 27th. (I talked to...

Area's only wild animal hospital may become extinct

7:48 PM Wed, Apr 15, 2009 |

The TreeHouse Wildlife Center in Brighton, Illinois is an incredible place. I got within inches of an injured bald eagle, some owls, a baby fox and a bobcat.

I got a little too close once. While taking pictures of a hawk through a cage with my cell phone, the bird nicked my finger with one of its talons. I'm fine.

But this facility is not fine. After more than 30 years the place is rundown, out of date and almost out of t...

Second "Tea Party" Planned for St. Louis

9:10 PM Tue, Apr 14, 2009 |

On February 27th, a few hundred people (I've heard estimates from 500 on up to 1,500 people) gathered at the arch to throw tea into the river. It borrowed the spirit of the Boston Tea Party of 1773 when colonists protested taxation without representation and tossed tea into the Boston Harbor.

Tomorrow, April 15th (tax day) even more protests are planned around the country and in >> Continue reading: Second "Tea Party" Planned for St. Louis

Schnucks security guard touched some lives

8:20 PM Tue, Apr 14, 2009 |

His name has yet to be formally released by police but several people we talked to outside the Schnucks at State and 25th in East St. Louis new him well enough to know they're going to miss him a great deal.

Personally I always wave or say "hello" to the security guards at the Schnucks near me but I've never stopped to have a conversation with them.

I met a guy named Gregory who told me he talked to the guard a lot. They joked...

East St. Louis cuts from public safety

7:31 PM Tue, Apr 14, 2009 |

East St. Louis city leaders cut five police officers and five firefighters after a budget hearing on Tuesday afternoon. Mayor Alvin Parks says the city is running out of tax revenue and can't afford to maintain current staffing levels. For instance, Mayor Parks says the city is getting 15 percent less than projected from the Casino Queen. Some residents say these cuts will be a major blow to public safety in the city. Mayor Parks says the city...

Teen Killed in Freak Accident

4:48 PM Tue, Apr 14, 2009 |

It is an unusual scene. A very short driveway in between two homes, which deadends with no barrier in the back yard. So how did a driver make a 90 degree turn into that driveway, and plow into four young people walking down that driveway cutting through to another neighborhood? That's a question Cahokia Police are working to answer and I'll be interested to hear the answer. If it was an accident - what happened... was the driver disabled i...

A Rally for Attention

10:17 PM Mon, Apr 13, 2009 |

The Neo-Nazis are going to rally in St. Louis this weekend. In years past the Anti-Defamation League's response to such an event would be no response. In other words just ignore it and don't give the group the attention it seeks.

But a spokesperson with the ADL says this year it's different. First, this event is larger than normal. Also, it's no secret we're going through tough times economically and that's when hate g...

Fallen Soldier Fondly Remembered

5:12 PM Mon, Apr 13, 2009 |

Sgt. Edward "Eddie" Forrester was killed in Iraq in a roadside bomb that killed four others and wounded dozens. It was his third tour of duty, and I guess his time came. While I looked back through file stories, most of the stories entitled "Iraq bombing" or something similar like that in our video files... were of suicide bombers targeting their fellow Iraqis.
Indeed, the bomb that killed Sgt. Forrester was the deadliest for U.S. Sold...

Major Case Squad Investigates Hit & Run

9:22 PM Sat, Apr 11, 2009 |

A spokesperson for the Major Case Squad put it this way--this is one of those cases where we're reaching out to the public for their assistance. In other words, somebody, somewhere knows something and they'd like to hear from that person.

This all revolves around the case of Jacqueline Jones who was a victim of a hit & run. Her body was found about 4 o'clock Friday morning at Route KK and Ridge Road in rural Lincoln county. Sh...

Another detour for I-64

9:38 PM Fri, Apr 10, 2009 |

Crews will shut down another stretch of I64/40 on Friday night. Contractors tell me they are tearing down a pedestrian bridge near Kingshighway. Drivers will not be able to go westbound on I-64 past Kingshighway. Nor will drivers be able to travel eastbound along that section of the interstate. We are told that traffic should open up on Saturday at noon.

Conficker... Revisited

9:15 PM Fri, Apr 10, 2009 |

It appears the much-talked about Conficker Worm (remember, it was supposed to start causing problems around April 1st) has started to do... something.

Security companies say a variant of the worm is downloading and installing new malicious sofware.

First, how do you know if you have it?

One rule of thumb is if you try to go to the microsoft site, Conficker... Revisited

A Hockey Game to Remember

9:13 PM Fri, Apr 10, 2009 |

Sometimes a game is more than a game. That was the situation tonight. We were in Affton for a hockey game between firefighters from the city of St. Louis versus firefighters and police officers from East Central which is made up of Clayton, Richmond Heights, Maplewood, Shrewsbury, Webster Groves and Olivette.

But this was a fundraiser for Backstoppers and was played in memory of Leonard Riggins and Ryan Hummert, two firefighter...

Easter Sunday, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!

2:47 PM Thu, Apr 09, 2009 |

A new St. Louis area church congregation is putting a whole new spin on Easter Sunday services.

Have you heard of the Ultimate Fighting Championship? Well, that's the theme of Sunday's Easter services at the Spirit of St. Louis Church currently meeting at Simpson Elementary School in Arnold.

The pastor and some of his church members have built an "octagon" with a cage around it, bright lights and black curtains. But there w...

Body found in Cuivre River

7:32 PM Wed, Apr 08, 2009 |

The time is 7:30 on a Wednesday evening. Just got word that the Major Case Squad will hold a press conference to talk about a body found in the Cuivre River in Troy,MO. When we got to the park this evening investigators had blocked off many of the entrances leading to the river. During our drive we spotted investigators towing a pickup truck that was covered in crime scene tape. One resident told me that crime lab searched the truck for hours,...

Roxana, IL teen elected to school board

3:43 PM Wed, Apr 08, 2009 |

This doesn't happen every year so when it does it's a neat story. 19-year old SIU Edwardsville Sophomore Justin Sandback got elected to the Roxana School Board last night. He beat out several incumbents to win his seat.

I met him today at Roxana High School from which he graduated less than two years ago.

Neat kid. He told me he'd never even run for student council before. He just became interested in politics when he got t...

Here Comes The Sun

11:18 AM Wed, Apr 08, 2009 |

I filled in for Lisa Manzo this morning. And I mean morning. She gets here at 3am.
The first live shot of the morning was about 5am. So... I saw the sun come up this morning.
And not in any old fashion, either. After the morning cut-ins, we went over to Art Hill to videotape Birchat Hachamah. That's a Jewish Blessing of the Sun. It is an ancient service that has its roots in a first century Talmudic scholar who calculated the ...

Mayor Slay celebrates another re-election

10:40 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

Mayor Slay arrived at his victory party at 10pm Tuesday night. After speaking to and thanking supporters and getting too many hugs and hand shakes to count I, along with a couple other journalists, spent a few minutes with him.

The Mayor told us he's truly honored to win a third-term. He says he'll get back to work Weddnesday morning but wouldn't get specific about his plans and goals for the next four years. He says he'll get speci...

"You're Cutting My Allowance?" The Recession and Your Teen

9:06 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

An odd memory popped into my head today. I was young (maybe 10 years old or so) and my dad just lost his job. I remember feeling worried, very worried. I pictured us starving and on the streets. I stressed about this for days before finally asking my mom, "are we going to be homeless?"

I can imagine what our kids are feeling these days.

It's easy to forget that the messages we see about the economy are also hitting kids and...

Slay supporters ready to celebrate

7:52 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

It appears Mayor Francis Slay will become the fourth St. Louis mayor to be elected to a third four-year term. Friends and supporters have gathered at the Moolah Theatre in Midtown to celebrate with the city's 45th mayor.

The polls closed about an hour ago and so far only absentee ballots have been counted.

If those results are indicative of the final numbers, there's not going to be much drama tonight. The mayor has 68% of ...

Tax Decrease on St. Louis County Ballot

4:05 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

People in the Mehlville Fire Protection District are getting a rare if not once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to vote today to DECREASE their property taxes.

I'd never heard of such of a thing. I talked to some long-time voters at the Tesson Ferry Library (a polling place) who can't remember ever having the chance to vote for a tax decrease.

I figured it would be impossible to find anyone who would vote against this, but I did. ...

Another detour for 64

3:56 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

Just got word that drivers will see another detour along Interstate 64/40. Crews are tearing down a pedestrian bridge that sits above the highway. During this demolition drivers will not be able to get on or off at Kingshighway. Crews tell me the damage should be cleared away by Saturday afternoon, and opened to traffic later that day. It seems that for the past couple of years drivers have been faced with detour after detour; however, crews t...

IL is Way Behind on Payments

3:08 PM Tue, Apr 07, 2009 |

What is "way behind" mean? How about 3.4 billion dollars behind, does that explain it? I spoke to some state leaders today about what is happening and they told me "the state has more bills than money at this time". The state's falling behind on payments is having a direct impact on schools across the state. Take Alton School District in particular, so far the district is still waiting on 3.9 million dollars in payments from Illinoi...

Green Bay Packers Fans Move Over--Here Comes Cardinal Nation

9:52 PM Mon, Apr 06, 2009 |

The day that Cardinal Nation has waited for has finally arrived.

Opening Day.

The umpire yells "Play ball...!" and the 2009 season is finally underway.

I was at the ballpark today covering the story about sports and the economy. This is one of those I-gotta-tell-ya moments. I gotta tell ya, it felt more like being at a Green Bay Packers game than a St. Louis Cardinals game (I'll admit, though, that I've ...

Ballpark Village... Not Yet

5:46 PM Mon, Apr 06, 2009 |

It's been four years since the Cardinals pitched Ballpark Village, and I don't have to tell you that nothing has happened. Oh, well, infighting over the Centenne Headquarters happened. The hole got filled and grass planted. And now the grass is scraped off for the Softball field and parking lot. The economy is terrible, everyone understands why the project is a no go now... but a softball field? I guess its better than nothing. The gradi...

Game Day Travel: Your Stories

5:21 PM Mon, Apr 06, 2009 |

The 40 closure combined with new metro cutbacks will mean longer commutes to the ballpark. Last week, Metro instituted new system-wide cuts which affect bus routes and how often trains run.

This evening, trains run every 15 minutes during rush hour (3pm-6pm) and every 20 minutes after that.

There are no extra trains to carry the crowds home and no extra staff to help manage them.

I'm wondering: how was your trip to Bus...

Play Ball St. Louis-Style

8:47 PM Sun, Apr 05, 2009 |

It's Sunday night in the newsroom and I'm getting ready to head over to Busch Stadium. The fans are camping out to be first in line to get the last-minute tickets that go on sale in the morning.

When you talk to some of these fans they'll tell you that they could have purchased their tickets earlier. But what fun is that? They'd rather sleep on the pavement and huddle in tents (they'll need to tonight...Kristen says it's going to b...

Final Four: Pumping $$ into St. Louis

9:05 PM Sat, Apr 04, 2009 |

What was that quote from the lawmaker in Washington, D.C...?

"A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money"? That was attributed to Everett Dirksen, the former U.S. Senator from Illinois. Although there is debate as to whether he ever really said that.

But the reason I bring it up is because the women's Final Four is in St. Louis this weekend and it's supposed to pump $20 million into the St. Lou...

The Problem of Puppy Mills goes on...and on...and on...and on...

9:13 PM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |

The Humane Society of Missouri is having to handle more than 100 dogs that were brought in from an alleged puppy mill in northwest Missouri. These are all small-breed dogs--Yorkshire terriers, Pekingese, Chihuahua, Maltese and miniature pinschers and poodles.

St. Louisans step up when it comes to caring for dogs in these conditions. This is the fourth time in the last few months that the humane society has had an influx of 100+ dogs ...

Mall employee attacked

4:45 PM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |

A woman who works at Claire's Boutique in South County Center Mall had an unbelievable experience.

One day she caught a 17-year old girl stealing a necklace in her store and alerting police.

The next day police say the teen's father coordinated an attack on the Claire's employee in the store. An unidentified woman beat her up while the father of the shoplifter held the clerk down.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?

A father...

Car Crashes into Rehab Center -- 2 Hurt

8:20 AM Fri, Apr 03, 2009 |

At this hour, the chaos of this morning's events has died down. Several fire trucks and police cruisers have left the scene. The fire is out and the two people injured are now at a hospital. Right now, crews are working to remove a car from the front entrance of St. Sophia's Health and Rehabilitation Center.

This is no accident, according to police. The Florissant Police chief tells me around 6:45 this morning, a man came to vi...

How to help Ernest Strong

9:33 PM Thu, Apr 02, 2009 |

An armed robber shot St. Louis Fire Fighter Ernest Strong two months ago outside his home. Since the shooting Strong has faced several surgeries, and he is expected to go through more. Because Strong was shot while he wasn't on duty the department is not obligated to pay for his medical bills. Family and friends will hold a fundraiser for Strong on Friday evening. If you would like to donate you can make checks payable to Friends of Ernest St...

Is Blagojevich saga a partisan issue?

8:25 PM Thu, Apr 02, 2009 |

I don't believe the word "corruption" applies to a political party. The word applies to certain misguided politicians regardless of party.

So I was surprised when Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter of Lebanon seemed to be associating all Illinois democrats with Rod Blagojevich. I talked to him on the phone tonight. And rather than me paraphrase what he said, here's our conversation word for word.

Sen. McCarter: "The sa...

The Price is Right

If you have kids and not a lot of money, this weekend offers a few unique opportunities.
The NCAA Womens Final Four is in town, and many of the activities are family friendly and free. The events begin on Saturday and are at venues around the area (although most are downtown.) There are basketball clinics at SLU, UMSL and the Jackie Joyner Kersee Boys and Girls Club. Also at Hoop City at America's Center. The March to the Arch start...

Resources for Domestic Violence Victims

5:15 PM Thu, Apr 02, 2009 |

Today, I met a woman named Jennifer Journey. She was attacked by an ex-boyfriend while at work on Wednesday morning. The man beat and kicked her in the head and face. She went to the hospital and had to have more than 20 stitches.

When I met Jennifer today she was very candid about past abuse she says she suffered. She says that her ex hit her before. Their relationship ended about two months ago after spending more than seven y...

Jefferson County 9-1-1 behind the times

5:11 PM Thu, Apr 02, 2009 |

You would assume in 2009 you can call 9-1-1 from anywhere on any phone and an ambulance, fire engine or police car will be able to get to you.

Well, in Jefferson County (and others in Missouri) if you call from a cell phone they have no idea where you are. If you're not able to tell them, they can't get to you.

That all could change soon IF taxpayers in Jefferson County agree to cough up half a penny on the dollar. The county...

Crystal City sex shop tests city ordinance

Apparently six days a weeks aren't enough when you run an "adult superstore."

It states at the top of page 18, "Such businesses shall be closed o...
