What next for GM in Wentzville?

7:59 PM Tue, Mar 31, 2009 |

The Obama administration is giving GM 60 days to meet new, tougher requirements for government aid. Among those, more concessions from the unions. Uh oh.

The Wentzville commercial van plant workers I talked to today say they've sacrificed more than enough. It's time to "trim the fat in Detroit," one retired plant worker told me.

I talked to Wentzville Mayor Paul Lambi as well. It only took a few seconds for him to point out the obvious. If workers don't make more concessions they won't have to worry about it anymore because GM will go bankrupt and they won't have a job anyway.

When I called the local UAW Union Hall in Wentzville. I got a "no comment right now, but you can call back tomorrow," response.

The next 60 days will be interesting if this even goes 60 days. The new GM CEO Fritz Henderson pointed out today, if it becomes clear the changes the government is demanding can't be met by the June 1st deadline, GM could opt to go into bankruptcy court sooner. He also called the likelyhood of bankruptcy "certainly more probably" than in the past.

Mayor Lambi is counting on laborers and management getting together to do all they can to save the company and the 2,000 jobs at the Wentzville plant.
