St. Louis County Libraries are about to implement a new warning system in the teen section because some books appropriate for an 18-year old aren't right for a 13-year old. After some prodding from Citizens Against Pornography, library leaders are about to put labels with the word "High School" on books in the teen section with explicit sexual content. I talked to people coming in and out of the library and everyone seemed to like the idea or at least be fine with it. People don't want censorship and this is not it. In fact, the warning labels won't keep kids from checking out the books. The labels will just let them and their parents know what to expect on the inside. The only thing that surprised me about this story was the library's lack of interest in us doing it. No library manager would talk to us on or off camera about it. They wouldn't even let us inside the library to get video of the teen section. To be fair, a library spokesperson said she would email me a statement. I haven't received it yet, but I may just be having a problem accessing my email from my laptop right now. |
