I talked to two teachers today who graduated college without degrees in education. So how did they get into the classroom? Teach for America. Its a competitive program that matches college graduates with schools where the children are underserved - in both rual and urban settings. The agreement is for at least two years, but both young women I talked to today are going beyond. Others move on... and still others use the program to advance their own degrees. (And in this tight job market, some may use it as a bridge between graduation and employment in their field.)
The word "hope" has been used a lot lately, but these women seem to personify hope in the future and investment in youth.
