Wyvetter Younge Remembered

5:05 PM Sat, Jan 03, 2009 |

Long-time State Representative Wyvetter Younge was laid to rest today.

During the funeral service it was said that in politics there are no long-time enemies. And there are also no long-time friends. But Younge was a person who apparently made many friends during her career. Several hundred showed up today to pay their respects.

But what struck me most about Younge was her promise. When she was young she made a pact with a friend. She said that after she'd gone away to get her education she would return and help East St. Louis. She earned a degree in education as well as law degrees from both Saint Louis and Washington Universities. East St. Louis is a city that has had more than its fair share of troubles. With her credentials Younge could have moved on to greener pastures. But she didn't. She stayed and was committed to making her hometown a better place. You may not agree with her politics but you have to admire her spirit and commitment.
