Happy to Have a Job

8:28 AM Thu, Jan 15, 2009 |

Looking at the number of people that are unemployed I know that when someone gets a job it's time to celebrate. But inaugurations are interesting in that one minute candidates are tearing into each other, the next there's a winner a few weeks later -- a party on day one then on day two -- the fighting starts all over again. No one has ever thrown me a party when I got a job. My parents certainly celebrated when I left Washington U and tuition payments were done. Not that making 10,200 dollars a year was going to help cover any of those costs. But I was employed. This morning I read the number of "official" and "unofficial" balls for Barack Obama's inauguration. Wow. I didn't know you could have that many parties in one weekend or week. I'm wondering how many he's going to attend. As a man that's not a problem because you just throw on the same tux. Michelle Obama is going to need a wardrobe to match a former first lady's shoe collection. And the list of celebrities! I'm sure People magazine will be in DC. That should be interesting. I was in Jefferson City on Monday for Jay Nixon's inauguration.. or at least the early hours of it. It was low-key -- very much Nixon's style. I'm guessing there won't be any potluck-style dinners in DC. And while there were 4 thousand chairs set up for guests on the south stairs in Jeff City, security is expecting close to several million come Tuesday. Part of me wants to be in on all the energy and excitement. Another part says it's all just too much.
