A Census Jingle

7:36 PM Sat, Jan 10, 2009 |

The "Census Folks" were in town today. By that I mean several bigwigs with the U.S. Census Bureau were here to talk about kicking off the census and setting up an office here.

The good news--they'll be hiring about a thousand workers.
Part-time.
Full-time.
Temporary.

Across the state of Missouri they'll be hiring about 3,000 workers. In these tough economic times that's a good thing. A very good thing.

There was a press packet. These have various pieces of information for the reporters to use--quotes, facts, figures, etc. The packet included a DVD that ran about 3 minutes. It was a short video talking about the census. There's a campaign for this called "A New Portrait of America." It even included a song. I guess you could call it a "jingle" that played while several photos flashed across the screen.

My first thought was--in these tough economic times do we really need to spend tax dollars on a.....jingle?!?!

SUNDAY PM
PS: It's now 17 hours later after I posted the original comments. I'll give the government-types the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they signed the contract for the census PR campaign a few years ago (you know, when economic times were good) and the "ball was rolling" as they say. So they might as well use it.
