Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed former Illinois Atty. General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate this week. Burris is described by many as a good public servant. From 1979 to 1991, Burris was elected to the office of Comptroller of Illinois. He was the first African American to be elected to a statewide office in the state. Earlier this week I found that many of Burris's peers have described him as honest, hardworking, and his political career shows no signs of scandal. Burris's credentials would make him a lock for the senate seat. However Senate Democrats made it clear that they would not accept an appointment made by Governor Blagojevich who is accused of trying to sale the Senate seat. It seems that because of the Governor's current troubles, a qualified candidate such as Mr. Burris will not get a chance to serve the people of Illinois in this capacity. |
