Funraiser Planned Jan. 17 for Family of Racing Pit Crew Member

9:56 PM Sun, Dec 28, 2008 |

Dave Hampton's closest friends were stunned, when they heard he was crushed by a vehicle on Friday.

It happened at the Behlmann dealership in Hazelwood where Hampton worked.

It appears a hydraulic lift supporting the vehicle collapsed, according to a statement from the company.

Hampton, 47, was on the pit crew of Ray Walsh's stock car dirt track racing team in Soulard for 15 years. He had a wife and two children.

"He used to preach to us all the time about safety," Mike "Fuzzy" Hart, a fellow pit crew member, told me during an interview Sunday.

In a statement, dealership president Dan Behlmann said investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident.

"We need to do all we can to assist (Hampton's family), as well as the other members of the Behlmann Automotive family, all of whom have been touched by this," he said in the statement.

Hampton's racing teammates are planning a funraiser for January 17 at a location to be determined.

(Carpenters Hall is one possible location, but not finalized. stlracing.com might have details later, I'm told.)
