Give without really giving

4:23 PM Fri, Nov 21, 2008 |

There is an easy way to help non-profit organizations that rely on donations without having to open up your own wallet.

There's a web search engine called www.goodsearch.com that allows you to pick one of 69,000 charities (the number grows daily) to receive a penny every time you search an on-line retailer. If you actually buy something, a percentage of the purchase price goes to that cause.

If a penny doesn't sound like much, look at it this way. If a thousand people did two searches a day off goodsearch.com for a particular charity, that charity would get $7,300 a year. The money comes from on-line advertisers.

If you don't have a particular charity, but want to help out locally, you can type in your city to final local organizations you can help. Goodsearch.com has been around since 2005 but it's still catching on.

If you know of a non-profit not on goodsearch.com, let the agency know. Goodsearch will check them out to make sure they're legitimate and then they get added to the list.

Check it out.
