It's Over

11:53 PM Tue, Nov 04, 2008 |

I spent the evening at the Board of Election Commissioners in the City first, and then in the County. Unlike 2000, when the City had a lot of problems, all went well today. That might not seem remarkable, but don't forget this was the election in which emails flew warning of dirty tricks to keep people from voting. Turns out, that didn't happen in the City. Whew!
The County had one serious problem, but instead of a big conspiracy, it seems that it was a case of bad judgement. Poll officials in Velda City got twice as many voting machines from the County as they set up - they just felt the room was too small for them all. But did they call the Election Board to say so after the line became "hours long"? Nope, according to the County. When the County found out, they fixed it. The amazing thing... my colleague Julian Grace interviewed some voters who weren't upset... they were perfectly willing to wait 6 hours to cast a vote in this historic election.
We're all going to be sleepy tomorrow morning (especially Matt Sczesny - who did a great job in Chicago) and so will the hundreds of poll workers who labored in anonymity so we could exercise our right. Thanks to them... Condolences to the candidates who didn't triumph tonight... and Best hopes for those who did, that all the challenges ahead will be met with grace and intellect.
