Iconic St. Louis car salesman Dave Sinclair's latest commercial--taking on the Post-Dispatch for outsourcing some advertising production jobs to India--has taken off with St. Louisans. On this website there's been unanimous (so far) e-mail support for Sinclair's decision to pull his advertising from the newspaper over the issue. When I met Sinclair for the first time to interview him Wednesday, I was stunned at this octogenarian's innate ability to connect with people. But he's more than a salesman. He seems to have an uncanny ability to check the pulse of the American people. For instance, he mentioned that after the 911 attacks he ran television commercials offering 100 free airline tickets. He wanted to get people flying again (and into his dealerships). Sinclair said it wasn't necessary to buy a car--or look at one-- to get in on a raffle for the tickets. That idea won him a lot of attention, too. And he told me he wound up appearing live on NBC's Today show. He says despite the tough economy September was a relatively good month at his dealerships. As for October, he says he'll know how things went at the close of business Ocotober 31. |
