October 2008 ArchivesThis morning I covered my second campaign rally in the past two weeks and I'm proud to say I stayed awake for both of them. (Keep in mind I wake up at 2:20am to be on News 4 This Morning). I covered Joe Biden's speech at Fox High School in Arnold today. Last week I reported on John McCain's rally in St. Charles. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy politics and having big wigs come to town is exciting stuff. But as I mentioned in my...
I got a kick out of something the other day. I was driving on Loughborough by I-55 and about 100 yards apart stood two men holding up signs. One guy's self-made sign said something like, "Homeless, need money." And he collected cash from people kind enough or feeling guilty enough to roll down their car windows and give him some money. The other guy was holding up a professionally-made sign that said something like, "Little C...
It was a typical afternoon in the newsroom, when my story suddenly changed. We rushed out to some breaking news in Monroe County where a man was dangling about 100 feet off the ground. He was trying to set up a zip line in the woods when he got stuck. Our chopper arrived and caught the story from the air, but firefighters wouldn't allow us close enough to get video on the ground. Fortunately, a passerby had a video camera and arrived early eno... A couple of young thugs met their match when they tried to carjack the wrong guy... One of them shot to death with his own gun... the other arrested. The "wrong guy" was an off-duty police officer who apparently knew what to do when a teenager threatened him with a revolver and demanded his car keys. I wonder if the next armed punk who considers approaching an innocent citizen will think about what happened to the kid Sunday af... There are somethings in life I will never understand. Such as how a baby's bones are formed in a mother's womb. Why gas prices are so high, and finally why a one and half year old boy named Rashaad Bobbitt had to die. Rashaad, his siblings, and his mother and father were riding through Pagedale, MO. When a gunman unloaded 13 shots inside the car that carried the family. The gunman even chased the family half way to the police station before d... We will soon find out as GOP Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is scheduled to drop the ceremonial puck before the Blues-Kings game Friday night. The Blues invited her since she's going to be in Springfield Friday morning. When Palin dropped the puck in Philadelphia recently, boos drowned out any cheers. (Of course, Philly fans booed Santa Claus). Personally, I can't imagine booing a politician at a sporting event ... I spent the wee hours of Wednesday morning trying to confirm details of a horrible story. A year-and-a-half old boy shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Tuesday night. From 5:00 until 6:00 I reported, "last we heard the child was in critical condition, but no word on his condition this morning." I kept saying that even though one of our competitors reported the child had died. I talked to three St. Louis County Police offic... I just walked into the KMOV newsroom and found out the Sears store is closing at Jamestown Mall. Normally, a store closing wouldn't make me think twice, but my grandmother used to work at Jamestown. I remember the days we used to vist her at the Boyd's department store, those days are long gone. It seems like the mall was always packed, just like Northwest Plaza in St. Ann. I recently drove by Northwest and noticed the parking lot looked like ... What is the deal with naked bartenders? 24-year old Jamie Day was allegedly strutting her stuff at the Pub Room in downtown Alton. Why? Tips I suppose... Perhaps boredom? I tried to have a civilized conversation with the guy who said he owned the place. But he said he didn't know what I was talking about. When I filled him in one of his employees was arrested for working with no clothes on, he said, "No comment." Then not ... It is always interesting to talk to a politician during a campaign. Well, it can be interesting. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit down with John McCain to talk about the campaign. He pretty much stuck to his "talking points", as they say. Not surprising, considering how much is at stake in these final days. He was courteous, but preoccupied (understandable). And whereas I felt as if he would talk about "Joe the plumber" even if I ... A man dressed in an orange jacket, holding balloons, and a package walks by hundreds of people and places a bomb in a parking lot. How many times have we seen someone who looked suspicious walk right by us and we did not take note of that encounter. I am not saying that we should stereotype people;however, we should be aware of the people that pass us each and everyday. Investigators are still searching for the man who left the bomb in the par... In the Show Me State, like so many across the country, unemployment is on the rise. I checked today and as of June there was a little under 210 million dollars in Missouri's unemployment trust fund. So, what's problem? Well there is a really good chance that the state could run out of money to fund unemployment before the next round of tax payer money is added this coming spring. The big problem is that in recent months the state has had t... "St. Charles. Thank you." That may have been the only quote I heard from John McCain at his Monday morning rally I hadn't already heard him say dozens of times in the past few weeks. If you heard his acceptance speech at the GOP convention or his most recent debate, then you didn't miss a thing at this rally. I'm not picking on Senator McCain. Barack Obama did pretty much the same thing Saturday at the Arch. ALL politicians... This seems to be the time of year when the campaign calls are ringing phones more frequently. And with only a few weeks left before election day it seems anyone can get these calls. We all know what an evacuation is. Or do we? I covered a fire at a building on the Barnes Jewish Hospital campus in St. Peters Friday. It was a building under construction. The fire did not spread to where patients were and no one was hurt. However, because of smoke getting in to the adjacent building which housed a maternity ward on the third floor, five patients were moved down one floor for several hours. No one was forced t...
Iconic St. Louis car salesman Dave Sinclair's latest commercial--taking on the Post-Dispatch for outsourcing some advertising production jobs to India--has taken off with St. Louisans. ...
All these extra voters did create a few snags in the voting process, to keep up with... When will it end? As an investor myself, it is agonizing watching the Dow drop in the high triple digits.... and then rise again... only to drop again. But hey, I'm only losing money on paper, right? It's just numbers right now. That's what I keep telling myself at least. I talked to an investment guy in Creve Coeur today who told me if we don't need the money right now don't worry about it, we will make it back. It may take fi... Today I attended a citation ceremony for St. Louis County Police Officers, some of whom had helped to rescue a grandmother and her grandson after their SUV crashed into the Meramec River in Fenton. Chesterfield's City Council may pass a new ordinance that would "stick it" to anyone caught shoplifting with tools. In recent months police say they've seen an increase in the number of people using tools like: wire cutters, magnets, razor blades and box cutters. A new ordinance would allow police to charge someone suspected of shoplifting with one of these tools with the use of a "theft device" along with the theft of the item. We... The third and final presidential debate is Wednesday night and it seems many "experts" say it's just about over John McCain. That's what the polls show as the gap is only getting wider. I talked to a history professor at Wash U today about what if anything McCain can do tonight to make up ground... and what Barack Obama needs to do to maintain his advantage. Professor Peter Kastor, who teaches a class on the presidency, says h...
I'm sure some are wondering should they have to worry about their jobs? You'll remember last year shortly after Wachovia took over A.G. Edwards we saw layoffs. This morning Wells Fargo Offici... I could not believe it 2.99 for a gallon of gas! Seeing that price was like finding five dollars in an old pair of jeans. Times are tough, and money is tight. So it came as no surprise that many people were smiling Saturday afternoon as they pumped their gas. AAA experts say gas prices should continue to fall over the next couple of weeks. This comes at the right time as the DOW goes up and down, as job security is becoming a thing of the pas... If you look at history of the United States, there seems to be a trend that when the economy slumps, crime goes up. No one is saying that is what is happening in the metro, but it's a topic that I found out many people in city government and law enforcement are paying close attention too. The issue in St. Louis is money. There are some who say the city needs more police officers but given the current budget the city can not afford them. So... So it's perhaps a bit of irony that the financial crisis could end up stopping Inbev's bid for AB. But financial experts believe it is a real possibility and AB stockholders seem to be worried since they're selling at 61 dollars a share when they know Inbev is willing to pay 70 dollars next month. Home foreclosures are a huge deal. Today I learned that more than 5 thousand people in St. Louis County are faced with the real possibility that they could loose their home any day now. With that being said, we found out today that help is on the way; the federal government recently allocated 17 million dollars for St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Clair County to deal with home foreclosures. Here's the break down: S... What fun today at Washington University. This is when I feel so lucky to be a reporter. |
