Another predictable campaign rally

12:59 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

This morning I covered my second campaign rally in the past two weeks and I'm proud to say I stayed awake for both of them. (Keep in mind I wake up at 2:20am to be on News 4 This Morning).

I covered Joe Biden's speech at Fox High School in Arnold today. Last week I reported on John McCain's rally in St. Charles.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy politics and having big wigs come to town is exciting stuff. But as I mentioned in my...

FAKE "CABLE MAN" TURNS OUT TO BE AN ATTACKER

5:42 AM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

This morning News 4 is still following a disturbing incident in Jefferson County. Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are still searching for a HOME INVASION SUSPECT that say pretended to be a "CABLE MAN" when he knocked on the door of a woman's apartment in Imperial, Missouri around noon Wednesday.
We're told after the woman opened her door, the man forced his way inside, knocked her down and attempted t...

Why does Missouri not have early voting?

5:51 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

I called the Secretary of State's Office today in Jefferson City and a spokesperson told me that early voting is something state leaders have looked into. Dating all the way back to 2005 Secretary Carnahan's pushed a bill asking the Missouri House and Senate to consider it. If passed, Carnahan would like to see two weeks of early voting. It would start three weeks before the election and end one week prior. Her spokesperson says tha...

Can you STAND to work?

10:01 AM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

I got a kick out of something the other day.

I was driving on Loughborough by I-55 and about 100 yards apart stood two men holding up signs. One guy's self-made sign said something like, "Homeless, need money." And he collected cash from people kind enough or feeling guilty enough to roll down their car windows and give him some money.

The other guy was holding up a professionally-made sign that said something like, "Little C...

IT'S COUNT DOWN TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION!

7:00 AM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

THIS MORNING HERE IN THE NEWS 4 NEWSROOM WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE CLOSE PRESIDENTIAL RACE BETWEEN REPUBLICAN JOHN McCAIN AND DEMOCRAT BARACK OBAMA.
THE RACE IS SO CLOSE----POLLS SHOW IN MISSOURI ILLINOIS SENATOR BARACK OBAMA LEADS McCAIN 48% TO 47%....OF COURSE, GIVEN THE MARGIN OF ERROR, YOU CAN SEE WHY ON THURSDAY BOTH TICKETS RETURN TO THE SHOW-ME-STATE FOR LAST MINUTE CAMPAIGN RALLIES.
OBAMA WILL STUMP IN COLUMB...

Learning From Mistakes

9:23 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |

It was a typical afternoon in the newsroom, when my story suddenly changed. We rushed out to some breaking news in Monroe County where a man was dangling about 100 feet off the ground. He was trying to set up a zip line in the woods when he got stuck. Our chopper arrived and caught the story from the air, but firefighters wouldn't allow us close enough to get video on the ground. Fortunately, a passerby had a video camera and arrived early eno...

Will the bad guys ever learn?... Probably not.

7:35 AM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |

A couple of young thugs met their match when they tried to carjack the wrong guy... One of them shot to death with his own gun... the other arrested.

The "wrong guy" was an off-duty police officer who apparently knew what to do when a teenager threatened him with a revolver and demanded his car keys.

I wonder if the next armed punk who considers approaching an innocent citizen will think about what happened to the kid Sunday af...

Why Rashaad?

7:38 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

There are somethings in life I will never understand. Such as how a baby's bones are formed in a mother's womb. Why gas prices are so high, and finally why a one and half year old boy named Rashaad Bobbitt had to die. Rashaad, his siblings, and his mother and father were riding through Pagedale, MO. When a gunman unloaded 13 shots inside the car that carried the family. The gunman even chased the family half way to the police station before d...

Would you boo a candidate?

8:12 AM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |

We will soon find out as GOP Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is scheduled to drop the ceremonial puck before the Blues-Kings game Friday night.

The Blues invited her since she's going to be in Springfield Friday morning.

When Palin dropped the puck in Philadelphia recently, boos drowned out any cheers. (Of course, Philly fans booed Santa Claus).

Personally, I can't imagine booing a politician at a sporting event ...

Getting it first and getting it right

7:30 AM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |

I spent the wee hours of Wednesday morning trying to confirm details of a horrible story. A year-and-a-half old boy shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Tuesday night.

From 5:00 until 6:00 I reported, "last we heard the child was in critical condition, but no word on his condition this morning." I kept saying that even though one of our competitors reported the child had died.

I talked to three St. Louis County Police offic...

Future Of North County Malls

2:42 PM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |

I just walked into the KMOV newsroom and found out the Sears store is closing at Jamestown Mall. Normally, a store closing wouldn't make me think twice, but my grandmother used to work at Jamestown. I remember the days we used to vist her at the Boyd's department store, those days are long gone. It seems like the mall was always packed, just like Northwest Plaza in St. Ann. I recently drove by Northwest and noticed the parking lot looked like ...

PUT SOME CLOTHES ON, PLEASE!

12:52 PM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |

What is the deal with naked bartenders?

24-year old Jamie Day was allegedly strutting her stuff at the Pub Room in downtown Alton. Why? Tips I suppose... Perhaps boredom?

I tried to have a civilized conversation with the guy who said he owned the place. But he said he didn't know what I was talking about. When I filled him in one of his employees was arrested for working with no clothes on, he said, "No comment." Then not ...

McCain in New Town

8:24 AM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |

It is always interesting to talk to a politician during a campaign. Well, it can be interesting. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit down with John McCain to talk about the campaign. He pretty much stuck to his "talking points", as they say. Not surprising, considering how much is at stake in these final days. He was courteous, but preoccupied (understandable). And whereas I felt as if he would talk about "Joe the plumber" even if I ...

Someone had to see something.....

10:49 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

A man dressed in an orange jacket, holding balloons, and a package walks by hundreds of people and places a bomb in a parking lot. How many times have we seen someone who looked suspicious walk right by us and we did not take note of that encounter. I am not saying that we should stereotype people;however, we should be aware of the people that pass us each and everyday. Investigators are still searching for the man who left the bomb in the par...

Unemployment. What are we going to do?

4:44 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

In the Show Me State, like so many across the country, unemployment is on the rise. I checked today and as of June there was a little under 210 million dollars in Missouri's unemployment trust fund. So, what's problem? Well there is a really good chance that the state could run out of money to fund unemployment before the next round of tax payer money is added this coming spring. The big problem is that in recent months the state has had t...

Politicians: "Give me something I can use!"

1:39 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

"St. Charles. Thank you."

That may have been the only quote I heard from John McCain at his Monday morning rally I hadn't already heard him say dozens of times in the past few weeks. If you heard his acceptance speech at the GOP convention or his most recent debate, then you didn't miss a thing at this rally.

I'm not picking on Senator McCain. Barack Obama did pretty much the same thing Saturday at the Arch. ALL politicians...

An Unusual Campaign Call

10:05 PM Fri, Oct 17, 2008 |

This seems to be the time of year when the campaign calls are ringing phones more frequently. And with only a few weeks left before election day it seems anyone can get these calls.
And among those who got a call from the Obama campaign this week was the co chairman of the McCain for President campaign in Missouri.
Jack Jackson says he got a message inviting him to attend the Obama rally at the arch this weekend.<...

What's an "evacuation?"

1:07 PM Fri, Oct 17, 2008 |

We all know what an evacuation is. Or do we? I covered a fire at a building on the Barnes Jewish Hospital campus in St. Peters Friday. It was a building under construction. The fire did not spread to where patients were and no one was hurt.

However, because of smoke getting in to the adjacent building which housed a maternity ward on the third floor, five patients were moved down one floor for several hours. No one was forced t...

A DISTURBING & DEVELOPING STORY

2:46 AM Fri, Oct 17, 2008 |

IT'S 2:30 IN THE MORNING AND I JUST ARRIVED INTO THE NEWS 4 NEWSROOM. WE'RE STILL COVERING A DISTURBING AND DEVELOPING STORY OUT OF SAINT GENEVIEVE COUNTY.

ON NEWS 4 AT 10 THURSDAY NIGHT, WE FIRST REPORTED THAT SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES WERE ON THE SCENE OF A MURDER. THE DETAILS, STILL SKETCHY, BUT WE'RE TOLD A MAN WAS FOUND DEAD INSIDE HIS HOME AROUND 3:30 THURSDAY AFTERNOON NEAR HIGHWAY D...APPARENTLY NOT FAR FRO...

Sinclair's Sales Pitches Continue To Connect

7:20 PM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |

Iconic St. Louis car salesman Dave Sinclair's latest commercial--taking on the Post-Dispatch for outsourcing some advertising production jobs to India--has taken off with St. Louisans.

Record Early Voting

4:31 PM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |

Madison County, IL is seeing record early voting, and I mean record. Up until this year the most people the county had ever seen "vote early" was 500. This past Tuesday the eager voters in Madison County blew that away. On the first day of early voting 2,000 people cast their ballots. On Wednesday the number dropped slightly to 18 hundred.

All these extra voters did create a few snags in the voting process, to keep up with...

Volatility the new norm for now

11:22 AM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |

When will it end? As an investor myself, it is agonizing watching the Dow drop in the high triple digits.... and then rise again... only to drop again. But hey, I'm only losing money on paper, right? It's just numbers right now. That's what I keep telling myself at least.

I talked to an investment guy in Creve Coeur today who told me if we don't need the money right now don't worry about it, we will make it back. It may take fi...

Heroes and Hearts

4:28 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

Today I attended a citation ceremony for St. Louis County Police Officers, some of whom had helped to rescue a grandmother and her grandson after their SUV crashed into the Meramec River in Fenton.
They acted on instinct, swimming out into the rushing (and dangerous) Meramec to pull the two victims from the vehicle. Others on the bank helped them up to Paramedics.
Sadly, the two passed away later at the hospital. The officers wen...

Shoplifting in Chesterfield

4:01 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

Chesterfield's City Council may pass a new ordinance that would "stick it" to anyone caught shoplifting with tools. In recent months police say they've seen an increase in the number of people using tools like: wire cutters, magnets, razor blades and box cutters. A new ordinance would allow police to charge someone suspected of shoplifting with one of these tools with the use of a "theft device" along with the theft of the item. We...

Now or never for McCain?

1:10 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

The third and final presidential debate is Wednesday night and it seems many "experts" say it's just about over John McCain. That's what the polls show as the gap is only getting wider.

I talked to a history professor at Wash U today about what if anything McCain can do tonight to make up ground... and what Barack Obama needs to do to maintain his advantage.

Professor Peter Kastor, who teaches a class on the presidency, says h...

FIRE VICTIM HOLDING ON THIS MORNING

3:20 AM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

ON NEWS 4 THIS MORNING, WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE CONDITION OF A LOCAL WOMAN.....FIREFIGHTERS HAD TO PULL FROM HER BURNING HOUSE LAST NIGHT.
SO FAR, WE DON'T KNOW HER NAME. HOWEVER, WE UNDERSTAND THE VICTIM, WHO WAS RESCUED FROM THE BACK OF HER HOME, APPARENTLY WAS OVERCOME BY HEAVY SMOKE THAT FILLED HER HOME IN THE 97-HUNDRED BLOCK OF LILAC IN RIVERVIEW.

AT THIS EARLY HOUR OF 3AM, AS YO...

WACHOVIA: IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME

8:55 AM Mon, Oct 13, 2008 |

Now that the Federal Reserve has paved the way for Wells Fargo's 12-billion-dollar takeover of Wachovia Bank and its St.Louis based Securities Division no doubt a lot of local customers will have a lot of questions.

I'm sure some are wondering should they have to worry about their jobs? You'll remember last year shortly after Wachovia took over A.G. Edwards we saw layoffs. This morning Wells Fargo Offici...

It is about time!

8:59 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |

I could not believe it 2.99 for a gallon of gas! Seeing that price was like finding five dollars in an old pair of jeans. Times are tough, and money is tight. So it came as no surprise that many people were smiling Saturday afternoon as they pumped their gas. AAA experts say gas prices should continue to fall over the next couple of weeks. This comes at the right time as the DOW goes up and down, as job security is becoming a thing of the pas...

History Lesson

4:20 PM Fri, Oct 10, 2008 |

If you look at history of the United States, there seems to be a trend that when the economy slumps, crime goes up. No one is saying that is what is happening in the metro, but it's a topic that I found out many people in city government and law enforcement are paying close attention too. The issue in St. Louis is money. There are some who say the city needs more police officers but given the current budget the city can not afford them. So...

Money Crisis and the AB Deal

10:38 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

So it's perhaps a bit of irony that the financial crisis could end up stopping Inbev's bid for AB. But financial experts believe it is a real possibility and AB stockholders seem to be worried since they're selling at 61 dollars a share when they know Inbev is willing to pay 70 dollars next month.
But despite the growing doubt created by troubled banks that may not be willing to finance the deal, there are also reasons to bel...

METRO EAST MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS FATHER

12:51 PM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

Today, News 4 was first on the scene and first to report a disturbing story out of Madison County, Illinois.
33 Year old James Lane, of Wood River, is now charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery in the death of his father, 63 year old James R. Lane.
When we went to the Madison County Sheriff's Office bright and early this morning around 4:30, I went inside the department...

Foreclosure Help

4:28 PM Fri, Oct 03, 2008 |

Home foreclosures are a huge deal. Today I learned that more than 5 thousand people in St. Louis County are faced with the real possibility that they could loose their home any day now. With that being said, we found out today that help is on the way; the federal government recently allocated 17 million dollars for St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Clair County to deal with home foreclosures.

Here's the break down:

S...

Partisan Politics

7:41 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

What fun today at Washington University. This is when I feel so lucky to be a reporter.
Walking around the campus today, doing my story, I felt like a kid in a candy store, even though this is the third time I've covered a Presidential (or VP) debate.
The mood was lighthearted because it is the day "before" the event. Hard work is underway... and has been underway for a long time... but there is still time to fix problems. Tomor...
