Pigeons have been called down right disgusting. They have been labeled by some as a rat with wings, and some people can't stand their presence. However, when residents in Alton spotted many of the birds struggling to walk, unable to fly, and turning up dead their was a sense of compassion for these downtown visitors. When my photographer and I arrive in the town we were quickly greeted by residents who were upset that someone would poison these creatures. We met one business owner who walked us around the downtown area and pointed out at least a half of dozen pigeons that were dead, and two that were dying. At that time no one knew who did this, but one thing was clear residents wanted and demanded answers. A day later we found out that a company in Alton was responsible for the pigeon demise. A spokesman for ConAgra Foods said the company had hired a pest control company to get rid of the pigeons at the company's huge grain mill on the Alton riverfront. We are told that the poison used was not suppose to kill the pigeons it was only suppose to make them sick for a period of time. Currently conservation officers are reviewing this case. It's strange, the bird that may have been the least like able became the most defended... at least for a week in the city of Alton. |
