The Sweet Side of Politics

4:24 PM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 |

Presidental Cookies.jpg

Politics can be a nasty business and leave behind a bitter taste in the mouths of election losers. But I discovered a sweet side to politics. While picking up my press credentials for th...

Showing Thanks....

9:13 AM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 |

A talented artist is robbed at gun point outside his apartment in Soulard. According to investigators five teens approached the resident and asked him for directions. The victim gave the five young men directions. Then suddenly one of the teens pulled a gun a placed it on the back of the victim's neck. They walked the victim inside and took his wallet, cell phone, and some documents. Investigators say after the suspects got what they wanted th...

Fight on You Tube

4:09 PM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 |

A local fight on You Tube is getting a lot of attention. Belleville Police tell News 4 that so far this has been a tough case to work because they don't have a copy of video. From talking to police today I learned that should change soon, because someone called with a copy they are willing to let the police look at. According to Don Sax with BPD the video involves elementary students fighting at the city skate park. News 4 looked for the vi...

CHILD HURT ON FOOTBALL FIELD

3:38 AM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 |

This morning on News 4 THIS MORNING, we continue to follow a disturbing story out of Mehlville where last night a 12 year old boy was hurt apparently while at football practice at Washington Middle School.
We heard about this story last night, at which time, there were two conflicting stories. My assignment desk person says according to the Mehlville Fire Chief and Fire Dispatch, the boy was "practicing football at Wa...

Wash U Debate Security

4:06 PM Thu, Sep 25, 2008 |

With the debate at Washington University only days away we're learning about security plans for the big night. Local law enforcement leaders didn't want to tell us too much, but we know there will be local and federal agencies on hand. I sat down with the St. Louis Public Safety Director, Charles Bryson, today and he gave me a few interesting details... there will be:

- 2-4 St. Louis City Health Department Workers
- A St. Loui...

Thinking about ditching school... think again!

11:46 AM Wed, Sep 24, 2008 |

Students who cut class in Pine Lawn will be taken into police custody. That's no joke, starting Thursday officers will take students found on the streets during school hours and place them inside a new Truancy center that is located in the Pine Lawn police department. School districts struggle each year to find ways to keep some students in the classroom. However, those students will not be able to hide. Officers are now searching for those wh...

10:34 AM Tue, Sep 23, 2008 |

THIS AFTERNOON MEMBERS OF A.C.O.R.N. THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS FOR REFORM NOW ARE SUPPOSED TO VOICE OPPOSITION TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S APPARENT 700-BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT PLAN.
I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE GROUP'S SPOKESPERSON, AND HE SAYS AROUND NOON THEY WILL PROTEST OUTSIDE THE SAINT LOUIS FEDERAL RESERVE BANK IN THE 400 BLOCK OF LOCUST STREET. HE SAYS THEY HAVE MANY CONCERNS TO...

HAMPTON BRIDGE BYE BYE, SORT OF!

7:16 AM Mon, Sep 22, 2008 |

Today, on this first day of autumn, the HAMPTON AVENUE BRIDGE, is seeing major changes.
You might say it's undergoing, or at least, preparing for a "MAJOR MAKEOVER." By now, you may have heard this morning around 5:30, crews began shutting down the overpass; which is the main entrance to the St. Louis Zoo and Forest Park.
We were told it would be close between four and five a.m., but it did...

YOUNG THIEVES CAUGHT ON TAPE

8:39 AM Thu, Sep 18, 2008 |

RIGHT NOW, I'M BUSY WORKING ON A STORY FOR NEWS 4 AT NOON. IT INVOLVES SOME PRETTY CLEAR SURVEILLANCE VIDEO GIVEN TO US BY THE SAINT LOUIS COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT.
YOU CAN CHECK IT OUT ON KMOV.COM LATER THIS MORNING AFTER 9AM.

GRANDPARENTS, POLICE AT ODDS OVER SERIOUS CLAIMS

8:21 AM Thu, Sep 18, 2008 |

Stunning and disturbing allegations are coming out of East St. Louis. An 11 year old girl tells her grandparents almost a month ago at least six teenaged boys sexually asaulted her. The girl says the attack happened inside a townhouse near 43rd and Forest Boulevard in East St. Louis. She says the boy's tricked her after pretending to be a friend of her older brother's.
The child's grandparents contacted News ...

This is not a time to be a Hero

9:12 AM Wed, Sep 17, 2008 |

Two male suspects covered in hats, wearing hoodies, and ski masks break into a Goodwill store in Belleville. A worker hears the noise walks in the back of the store and spots the two men wearing black. Investigators say the two suspects told the clerk to "get over here now"... police say after hearing those words the clerk ran away and got help. The two suspects took off through a back door, and police arrived to the scene moments later. Afte...

WATER, WATER, WATER---IS STILL EVERYWHERE!

8:37 AM Wed, Sep 17, 2008 |

All night long, News 4's been keeping a close eye on the rising river levels in our area. Wow, have you seen the massive flooding down on the St. Louis Riverfront? This morning my photograper, live truck operator and I were in awe at just how "high" the water has gotten all along Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard and the sidewalks down on the popular Riverfront attraction.
Plus, talk about bus...

METRO

5:27 PM Tue, Sep 16, 2008 |

How to boil a complex issue down to a minute and ten seconds? That was the task today.
Take an audit of Metro that was begun in 2005 under one management and concluded in 2008 under a completely different team. And for good measure, throw in the fact that Metro is facing a budget deficit and has a tax issue on the November ballot. A bit much for 70 seconds. Thank goodness for KMOV.COM. The whole audit is there... judge for yo...

A Town Fights for Pigeons

9:33 AM Sat, Sep 13, 2008 |

Pigeons have been called down right disgusting. They have been labeled by some as a rat with wings, and some people can't stand their presence. However, when residents in Alton spotted many of the birds struggling to walk, unable to fly, and turning up dead their was a sense of compassion for these downtown visitors. When my photographer and I arrive in the town we were quickly greeted by residents who were upset that someone would poison thes...

Fight Crime with Jobs??? Really???

4:05 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

There is no question about it; the homicide rate in St. Louis is getting out of hand. What can we do? Well, that is where my story today about a new door to door effort fits in. "A Better Family Life" is heading up a new campaign to help men in North St. Louis get jobs. The hope is that if these men have jobs they'll be able to steer themselves away from a life on the streets. Today 20 young adults brought this message door to door in the...

9/11

4:37 PM Thu, Sep 11, 2008 |

This is perhaps a very petty blog on this momentous day, but it is one that I felt compelled to note.
As I was driving I saw a small group of people walking down Clayton Road. They weren't making a "fuss", just walking. But they carried American flags. Big flags. I couldn't help but think they were taking their time to commemorate 9/11. I didn't know how to honor them except to get out of my car at the red light and salute. Now.....

SO LONG, MR. SWOBODA!

9:00 AM Thu, Sep 11, 2008 |

Today is indeed a somber day for the city of Kirkwood. This afternoon scores of residents, city officials, family members and friends will fill First Presbyterian Church at 100 East Adams Avenue for a funeral service for the former Mayor.
The last seven months have been difficult for the entire community of Kirkwood. Mike Swoboda had been recovering from two gunshot wounds to the head and he also put up a heroe's fight ...

A Historical Treasure in Overland

6:22 PM Wed, Sep 10, 2008 |

Are you here because Laurie Waters told you to check out this blog?

There are so many times, as a reporter, we have too much to fit into our story. Today was one of those days.

You're probably familiar with the National Archives & Records Administration facility in Overland. I've driven past it since I was a kid. My memories of it are images burned into my mind of the fire at the facility in 1973. Video of firetrucks...

My Neighbor

4:55 PM Wed, Sep 10, 2008 |

Here in the KMOV newsroom, reporters sit in cubicles all together. Ray Preston calls it reporter-town. He is my neighbor. Today I was shooting a story to air later in our A Shared St. Louis series on race relations, so I was out of the building all day. When I got back, Ray was talking about his story on military records. It was very interesting - and not all of the fun stuff he learned could be included in his story because of time limit...

POLICE BOARD TO DISCUSS SAINT LOUIS MURDERS

3:51 AM Wed, Sep 10, 2008 |

It's a little after 3am here in the News 4 newsroom and my Executive Producer and I are discussing my story for today. It's a hot topic that you may have heard about in recent months: the increasing number of homicides in the city of St. Louis.
Today, members of the Saint Louis Boad of Police Commissioners are expected to discuss this disturbing issue during their morning meeting.
We checked and our m...

Gov. Blagojevich Running Late

10:18 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

The weather was perfect, so it's hard to complain, but Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich did keep us waiting in Granite City on Tuesday for nearly two hours.
The event at the site of a new ethanol plant was supposed to start at 4 pm. By the time the governor arrived it was 5:50. He did apologize to the patient crowd, and made a joke about thinking he could travel from Chicago to the metro east in ten minutes and he did...

COUNTDOWN TO BIG BIDEN VISIT

1:11 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

With less than two months until the November election, a number of voters in the Bi-State area today are bracing for a highly-anticipated campaign stop from Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Senator Joe Biden.
Interestingly, while News 4 was out there today at Mehlville Senior High School, in South St. Louis County, we saw a cornucopia of voters standing in line waiting to get inside the school's gym: Soccer Moms, Senior...

New Supt. in Town

5:51 PM Mon, Sep 08, 2008 |

Tomorrow we'll have our first conversation with the three candidates for head of the St. Louis Public School District. After all the district has been through - from Federal oversight to State oversight - over at least 30 decades of turmoil - its hard not to hope one of these three will be the educator to turn things around. When I look at the big picture, it seems hopeless. Politics and poverty are just two of the obstacles. But wh...

The Dangers of Wearing a Badge

9:25 AM Mon, Sep 08, 2008 |

On Friday, September 5th a 23-year vet of St. Louis Police Department shoots himself in the leg. According to the Police Chief Stephen Pollihan, the officer was responding to a burglary call in a vacant building when a pit bull jumped out behind a door and attacked the officer. The officer pulled his gun and shot the dog multiple times, but one of the bullets bounced off a wall and struck the officer in the leg. At the end of the day, crews ru...

Get ready to be angry, no matter what, maybe

9:15 PM Sun, Sep 07, 2008 |

This is from Amy Sullivan of Time magazine in an article headlined: "Are Evangelicals Really Sold on Palin?"

"While many pundits have wondered whether social conservatives will recoil from the news that (Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah) Palin's 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant, they're clearly not grasping the mores of that community. If Bristol Palin were the daughter of Democratic parents, she would un...

Attracting Missouri Voters

5:22 PM Thu, Sep 04, 2008 |

If you're a Missouri voter you'll want to read this. In my talks today with a McCain communications director I learned that there are some key steps they plan on taking to get you to pick him in November. To make it easier on you and me I'll list them below.

1. personal appearances
2. ground campaign
3. phone banks
4. ???? mystery

Ok, so what does mystery mean? Well when I asked today I was told they co...

Vandalia's Capitol

10:40 PM Mon, Sep 01, 2008 |

For those who enjoy history as I do, I wanted to pass along a few notes on Vandalia's Capitol Building.
The building was built in 1836 and was the state capitol until 1839. Abraham Lincoln did start his political career in the building when he served as a state legislator and earning $4 a day for his service.
Ironically, it was Lincoln who also spearheaded the effort to move the state capital from Vandalia to...
