I don't know anybody who likes road construction. Even the people doing the work who I've talked with aren't big fans of it and they're getting paid to sit in the heat and traffic. This week the city of St. Louis is resurfacing along Skinker. They aren't paving but putting down an oil and rock surface. It's significantly cheaper than asphalt but it's messy for the first few days. Rocks fly if traffic lanes are too close and drivers go too fast. Since no one really goes 15 mph, lanes are restricted to one in each direction and everything slows to a halt. Even with restrictions, cars were going faster than the posted speed limits when I was out there today. As a driver I hate to sit in traffic. I will drive out of my way to avoid it. But I also hate potholes so I must realize that I have to pay the price for good roads at some point and I guess the ultimate price I don't want to pay is higher taxes to foot the bill for fancy paving projects. That means putting up with messy road work for a few days. It's like using coupons at the store. I hate it but I do it now. |
