Back to School

10:11 PM Fri, Aug 15, 2008 |

This week many districts in the area started the new school year and next week many more will follow. In my home, the summer "officially ended" on Wednesday when the kids went back school and like my kids, I'm not ready. Every year at this time I have to see the strange look on my sons faces that says, "but it's still summer, and it's hot."
And I have to admit, I'm with the boys on this one. I'm "old school" on this and prefer the more tradional start of school after Labor Day. August is still a time for lazy summer days, swimming, fishing, playing ball, camping out and even family vacations, not packing lunches, homework and early bedtimes. And just think how this is killing business for ice cream trucks.
The transition to back to school just seems more natural once the calendar turns to September, when the nights get cooler and you notice the sun setting a little earlier.
I know there are probably some good reasons these districts have for making summer vacation start in the spring, and I doubt this schedule will change any time soon, but it sure would be nice to have summer vacation in the summer.
One disclaimer: my sons did not make me write this.
