Profits Washed Away

3:17 PM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 |

Flooding does damage to businesses even when the water never reaches a building. Business owners are finding this out in Alton and surrounding communities. The president of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau tells me that downtown Alton businesses never shut down during the floods. But there is a perception that much of the area was devestated by high waters because the Great River Road was closed for 10 days. Alton is kicking off an ad campaign to try and attract you back to the area. They need people to come back and see -- it's not devestated. Businesses aren't underwater. I talked with Ann Badasch from "My Just Desserts". She says after the floods of 1993 it took her 3 years to recover. Her business was blocks from the flooding. Alton business owners are hoping this weekend tourists get the message that now's the time to stop by. When we were there we didn't see any signs of flooding.
