New fines for Illegally parking in disability spots

4:32 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008 |

The State of Illinois recently unveiled a new plan to ticket people who illegally park in disability spots. In the past offenders faced a $ 500 dollar fine no matter how many times you broke the law. Now the first time a driver parks illegally they'll get a ticket for $ 500 dollars, the second time it jumps to $750 dollars and the third time it will cost the person one thousand dollars. At that point it will also be up to state whether or not the driver looses his or her license. There are some other changes: (1) if you get caught using someone else's placard you can now be fined and (2) long gone are the days where a disabled person can wait in the car in a handicapped spot while someone else goes inside to run an errand.

Do you have any thoughts on the new law? Is it too harsh?
