The St. Louis City Street Division has been testing 5 Telematic systems that include GPS tracking for the past year. It sounds strange that watching workers work could actually save money. But city managers say it can. By seeing a vehicle's every move, they can determine if it's traveling the most efficient route, if the driver is taking too much time idling and if the vehicle is in tip-top shape. Idling is the new no-no. In the past, diesel vehicles were left idling but now vehicles run only if they're performing a specific task. GPS can track sweeper trucks to find out if they're sweeping at the most efficient speed. Who knew that 8 to 10 miles per hour is the best way to get a street clean! Any faster and it's inefficient. I can't get GPS in my car, but I can follow a few of the other fuel saving measures street workers are following. Tire pressure is a big deal. I'm now thinking I need to get my tires checked if it means 2 to 3 percent fuel savings. Driving 55 -- another 2 to 3 percent savings according to the street department. I guess then you have to weigh your time against your money. |
