Stolen Dogs

10:19 PM Tue, Jun 24, 2008 |

The American Kennel Club reports that in the first three months of this year there have been 30 thefts of pure bred dogs in the country compared to only 10 in all of 2007.
Thefts of these animals is way up because thieves can get as much as 800 dollars selling them, especially on the internet.
The 7 in Bourbon, Missouri seem to be an example of this type of crime.
The AKC recommends owners keep track of ...

Some Notes on Flooding

11:20 PM Wed, Jun 18, 2008 |

It's remarkable how people can pull together when others truly need help. One home I visited in St. Charles County had dozens of people, including family, friends, boy scouts and even strangers pitchign in to help sandbagging. This family brought in 60 thousand pounds of sand to try and protect their home. I hope it works.
One interesting fact people told me about floods is the amount of wildlife that gets stirred up by the ...

One on One: Obama Makes Case for National Security, Taxes

8:55 PM Sun, Jun 15, 2008 |

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, making an historic run for president, recently campaigned in St. Louis for the first time since winning enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination.

You can watch my interview with Obama by clicking here now.

This was my second time meeting Obama. Our first meeting also took place in th...

AB Websites

10:37 PM Thu, Jun 12, 2008 |

There are actually two websites out there getting attention on the proposdd AB takeover. The saveab.com is the one based here in St. Louis. Savebudweiser.com is another site that has been operating out of Florida.
Both sites are drumming up opposition to the takeover with online petitions. And it is remarkable how passionate people are about this.
The question is, can it work and change the course of even...

High-Tech Fuel Savings

3:47 PM Tue, Jun 10, 2008 |

The St. Louis City Street Division has been testing 5 Telematic systems that include GPS tracking for the past year. It sounds strange that watching workers work could actually save money. But city managers say it can. By seeing a vehicle's every move, they can determine if it's traveling the most efficient route, if the driver is taking too much time idling and if the vehicle is in tip-top shape. Idling is the new no-no. In the past, diese...

Tomato Alert

10:59 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008 |

Just some notes on the tomato alert from the FDA on the salmonella outbreak.
The FDA says tomatoes not affected include those from the Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, and also does not include cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached.
If not sure where your tomatoes came from then contact the store where you purchased them.
And a...

New fines for Illegally parking in disability spots

4:32 PM Mon, Jun 09, 2008 |

The State of Illinois recently unveiled a new plan to ticket people who illegally park in disability spots. In the past offenders faced a $ 500 dollar fine no matter how many times you broke the law. Now the first time a driver parks illegally they'll get a ticket for $ 500 dollars, the second time it jumps to $750 dollars and the third time it will cost the person one thousand dollars. At that point it will also be up to state whether or n...

HiDef TV A Bust For Me

10:12 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008 |

My low tech experience with high definition television is less than stellar. I don't have cable TV or satellite and I don't have a high definition set. So I bought a converter box for my old set. I've used a rabbit ears antenna for years (I live in the Central West End). The reception hadn't been that great for some stations. But at least I could get a picture and audio at all times! With digital, though, it's all or nothing. I now ha...

Bud Fans Want Beer Base to Stay in St. Louis

9:00 PM Sat, Jun 07, 2008 |

Want to get 50,000 page views on a web site fast? Follow the lead of the anonymous protesters behind the SaveBudweiser.com site.
Their petition drive protesting the would-be takeover of St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch by Belgium-based InBev has more than 24,000 signatures.
"Keep it in St. Louis and family owned," writes Donna Reavis, who was 149th to sign the petition.
You might not know this, but the l...

Who should pick up the trash?

4:12 PM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |

There is a new trash clean up bill in front of the St. Louis Board of Alderman. According to Steve Conway, the alderman sponsoring the bill, he proposed it in the effort to get business owners to police the area around their business. As the bill stands now, a business owner would be required to clean up trash within 300 feet of his or her property. The bill applies to all carry out restaurants, fast food and convenience stores. I went aro...

Who Would Put Potato Chips in a Tennis Ball Can?

9:45 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |

Fredric J. Baur, that's who. You might not have heard of him, but you almost certainly know his work, all because of what he did 42 years ago in 1966.
As an organic chemist and food storage technician at Cincinnati-based Proctor & Gamble, Baur had the idea to stack similarly shaped potato chips in a can, instead of a bag.
Pringles was born.
Now, you can find Pringles all over the world. If you're living ...

Cemetery Vandals Avoid Police, Still Free

8:30 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |

More than one week after vandals damaged or destroyed dozens of headstones at two historic cemeteries in Pacific, police have not made any arrests. The city's $5,000 reward is unclaimed. What should happen next?
"I, like many others, have ancestors buried in these two cemeteries," one viewer writes in an email to me. "Whatever goes through the minds of someone who would do somthing like this. I hope they are caught an...

What to do with the road kill?

3:58 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |

There is a new policy in the state of Illinois to reduce the amount of road kill that IDOT crews pick up. The state sent out a press release late last week letting residents know that due to extra funding they had to spend during the winter months for ice and snow clean up they needed to make some cuts. So today we drove around and asked drivers what they think about the new policy. We couldn't even find one person who liked the state...
