Former Klansman Endorses Obama for President

8:15 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |

Yes, it's true. Less than one week after West Virginia Democrats voted overwhelming for Hillary Clinton, Sen. Robert Byrd, West Virginia's senior senator, says he's supporting Barack Obama for President.
Thinking the Associated Press might have gotten the story wrong, I called Byrd's Washington office.
But a spokesman told me the story is true. Byrd supports Obama.
Here's how the AP covered the story in its lead paragraph: "Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan and a one-time opponent of civil rights legislation, is endorsing Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination."
Byrd's spokesman promised to e-mail the senator's written statement about the endorsement, but I did not receive it in time for this column, so the AP's coverage will have to suffice for purposes of this report.
"In a written statement, Byrd called Obama 'a shining young statesman, who possesses the personal temperament and courage necessary to extricate our country from this costly misadventure in Iraq,'" according to the AP report.
