Stop Dumping!

3:44 PM Mon, Apr 14, 2008 |

The penalty for illegal dumping in East St. Louis is going up. Starting May 15th the minimum fine for dumping will be five hundred dollars. Currently the fine is 50 dollars. Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. tells News Four that they city has a serious problem and hopefully the new fine will be enough to convince people to not even consider dumping. Parks says that this is not an isolated issue and there are dump sites across the city. The city's general budget is 23 million, and of that 47 thousand is sent a year to clean up the sites. With the money allotted typically city workers can on average clean 23 locations. Parks also tells News Four that city leaders hope to increase the maximum fine for illegal dumping to five thousand dollars from seven hundred and fifty dollars. At this point city is getting legal counsel to see if they can make that official change.
