This week the family of a 6 year old, kindergartner contacts News 4 telling us their child somehow walked out the front door at Festus Elementary School and was gone off school grounds for what administrators say added up to about 10 minutes. Fortunately, Austin Langley wasn't harmed in any way. Still, his father, like many of us, still wondered HOW could it happen? After investigating the incident, I learned a number of interesting details. First, the school has one school resource officer for almost one thousand students. The school doesn't have any surveillance cameras or security guards; that's a concern for Mr. Langley and other parents in the area. Secondly, administrators say an alert school bus driver came to the rescue. The driver spotted Austin walking home by himself, approached him and then took the kindergartner back to the school. Thirdly, Mr. Langley tells me Austin, who's never left school before, was headed home to apparently play video games. Langley notes he has taught his son the importance of not talking to strangers. Despite the many concerns this incident may raise, the school's assistant superintendent, Ken Barker, says school officials, at this time, will NOT make any changes in school policy and safety measures. Please, let me know what you think? |
