Earthquakes in Midwest

9:28 PM Fri, Apr 18, 2008 |

I think like most people, I was surprised to find out that Missouri is third in the country for earthquake insurance purchasing, behind California and Washington. The Missouri Department of Insurance reports that over 200 insurance companies offer coverage, but the cost has gone up in recent years. The coverage, like flood insurance, needs to be purchased as seperate coverage.
Just last month the State of Missouri started work on a new earthquake hazard mapping project. This will identify areas more at risk for the shaking of a quake.
The USGC estimates that over the next 50 years there is a 7-10% risk of a major quake at 7.5 to 8.0 and 25-40% risk of a moderate quake, around 6.0.
