Today I was assigned to cover a truly disturbing story-- Madison County deputies were still shaking they're heads about the dangerous decision by a 15 year old Alton girl. Police say she drank large quantities of Jack Daniels whiskey at a bonfire party Saturday night. So much her blood alcohol level was .389--nearly five times the legal limit. The truth is she almost died, she was nearly in a coma when she was transported to St. Louis Children's Hospital where she remains at this hour. She is expected to be okay--but the big question is why did she drink so much? I spoke to an expert with the National Council on Alcohol and Drug abuse today--he told me while disturbing and scary cases like this one are not too uncommon. Teens tend to overembibe. It's such a problem in the St. Louis region the council is hosting a town hall meeting for parents about binge drinking next week in Clayton. Hopefully the message will get out. |
