Big River overflows banks in Jefferson county

7:34 PM Tue, Mar 18, 2008 |

BYRNESVILLE, Mo. - Property owners in this riverside community on Tuesday tied down picnic tables, grills and anything else that might float away, as the fast-moving Big River surged past flood stage and flooded neighboring fields.
"It wasn't nearly this high yesterday," said Jeramey Freihaut, whose family owns a bungalow along the river. "You have to keep your eye on it."
Freihaut spent part of the afternoon turning off power and making sure their property was secured, because the river is not expected to crest until Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis.
"Now you've got to make sure all your stuff is tied down, make sure nothing can float away, because if you think it will go, it will go," he said.
