Slow Down or Pay the Price

7:25 PM Fri, Feb 22, 2008 |

The recent icy roads sent vehicles slipping and sliding. Tow truck operators say, despite having 4-wheel drive, there were a lot of sport utility vehicles that ended up in the ditch with expensive damage. Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum says s-u-v drivers get overconfident in vehicles that sit higher, use bigger wheels and have 4-wheel drive. But 4-wheel drive won't help you stop any quicker than a vehicle with 2-wheel drive. If you want some incentive to slow down when roads are slick, just check out these prices for car repairs.

I talked with an auto body shop repair owner to get some ballpark numbers for common repairs to a vehicle that was in a collision on an icy road.
Replace a busted headlight: $400-$600 (including attached damage)
Replacing a bumper cover: $800 (Honda Accord), $1000 (Dodge Dakota) w/o extra paint work.
Add to it, fender replacement: $700-$1000.
Then you'll need to repaint door to blend color with new fender: $200.
New car door: $700-$1000.

Costs can add up quickly, which is a good motivation to slow down and stay back from the car in front of you.
Drive safely!
