Living up the Highway 40 shutdown

4:49 PM Wed, Feb 27, 2008 |

After doing what seems like a million stories on the difficulties caused by the shutdown of Highway 40, today... I had a different story.

A courier service in Olivette (Mercury Express) is loving the shutdown. The company's business grew in January and even more in February. Keep 40 closed, they say.
I expected a boring room with dispatchers sitting at quiet computers for our video but, boy, was I wrong.
The three men were standing before index card sized dispatch orders hung from racks on the wall. Each dispatcher worked two phones, sometimes at the same time. They moved like a choreographed dance exchanging the hangers to denote driver movement or job completion.
They barked instructions while rock music played in the background.
The driver we interviewed was another story in itself. Sure he's a courier, but he's also a student. He's going for a Ph.D in Astrophysics.
Just goes to show you, in this job, you never know what you're going to get.
