FAMILY PULLS TOGETHER AMID FIRE TRAGEDY

3:38 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008 |

One day after a fire destroyed their home and everything inside, three children from Granite City are still in a St. Louis area hospital.
Today, Michele Taber spoke briefly to reporters saying "the children still remain very critical."
We truly would like to thank all of the officials at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, the Granite City police and fire departments and especially 18 year old Josh Herron.
Herron, who graduated from Granite City High School last year and lives in the fire victims' neighborhood, didn't hesitate to jump through a rear window during the early morning hours of February 6th, to rescue the screaming children.
Next door neighbor Greg Chism told News 4 Wednesday that once incide, Josh handed him the children and he put 6 year old Alexxis Hart and her 4 year old brother, Zack, on the ground. Sadly, their 14 year old sister, Chelsea Ricketts was found unconcious, lying on a floor. Chism says he and a Granite City police officer rescued Chelsea.
Hats off to all of the good samaritans, who put their lives on the line and raced inside the burning house to get the children out!
Josh Herron didn't want to talk to me or any reporter yesterday, and today, we learned he had been contacted by a national television show, who was interested in his bravery and heroic efforts. However, Michele Taber says "the young man didn't want any coverage, he just did the right thing."
The family is now asking that the community keep them in their prayers as the children face a long road to recovery.

ALSO, trust funds are set up to assist the family. If you'd like to help in any way DONATIONS CAN BE MADE AT THE "GRANITE CITY REGENTS BANK" C/O THE MITCHELL CHILDREN.
ANOTHER FUND IS SET UP AT THE "GRANITE CITY STEEL CREDIT UNION" AND AT "PANERA BREAD, " WHERE THE CHILDREN'S MOTHER WORKS.
