Campus Security

2:59 PM Tue, Feb 19, 2008 |

When I went to college our biggest concern was the occasional assault or car theft. The last time anyone walked on campus with a gun and started shooting was back in the 60s at UT. Now gun violence is part of life. I find it surprising that kids still don't think it will be part of their lives. In a way, that's good. Today I was talking with students at SIUE. Most of them said they don't think about someone walking onto campus and shooting eventhough it just happened at NIU. That's good and bad. It allows them to be students and kids. It's bad in that you wonder if they saw something subtle, would they know what they were witnessing. I think so. SIUE/SIU-Carbondale are teaming up to create a texting system so they can send out text messages or e-lerts in emergencies. Email isn't fast enough and kids aren't always sitting at their computers. Cellphones keep us connected and officials are hoping, safe.
