February 2008 ArchivesIt is a cruel irony for many students that enoyed a day off to play in the snow now have to make up that day on what most likely will be hot days in the last week of May. The only option many districts had was to cancel scheduled holidays or cut back on spring break; options that may have been more unpopular than coming back to class after Memorial Day. ...After doing what seems like a million stories on the difficulties caused by the shutdown of Highway 40, today... I had a different story. ...The reaction from individuals, to our lemon tests, have been much like you'd expect, "That's gross!" "Yuk." "I won't order lemon in my water or tea anymore." But when we notified the eight restaurants that we tested, some were much more responsive than others. ...The recent icy roads sent vehicles slipping and sliding. Tow truck operators say, despite having 4-wheel drive, there were a lot of sport utility vehicles that ended up in the ditch with expensive damage. Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum says s-u-v drivers get overconfident in vehicles that sit higher, use bigger wheels and have 4-wheel drive. But 4-wheel drive won't help you stop any quicker than a vehicle with 2-wheel drive. If you wan... Andre Mathis not only got two awards for his actions in saving an 8 year old girl from an attempted attack and abduction. He also got gift certificates to the local Applebees and the Caseyville Holiday Inn. But the one thing this unemployed father needs is a job. Andre tells me he is trained as a cook, but he's willing to try any opportunity. Do a Google search for the term "cyber attacks" and you'll get 658,000 responses. You'll find articles with warnings about terrorists using computers to try to hack into the computer networks that run power plants, atms, air traffic control computers and water plants. Much of the response to these warnings has been a collective yawn, calling it warnings about the use of "weapons of mass disruption." But the insiders tell a much different story... When I went to college our biggest concern was the occasional assault or car theft. The last time anyone walked on campus with a gun and started shooting was back in the 60s at UT. Now gun violence is part of life. I find it surprising that kids still don't think it will be part of their lives. In a way, that's good. Today I was talking with students at SIUE. Most of them said they don't think about someone walking onto campus and shooting ... It's hard to believe that it could be true. Four years after an Iraq war veteran shattered his shoulder and damaged his spine while chasing an insurgent in Iraq is now told that the aches in his legs and his slight limp might be because he's getting older. Aaron Cromley is 37 years old. He's one of many veterans who answered their nation's call and put their lives at risk to serve in a war zone, only to feel as if their nation turned its back ... In East St. Louis today detectives spent the day investigating why a 17 year old boy, allegedly shot his godfather several times. Neighbors and friends of the boy have identified him for News 4, we also have a picture of the teenager, but at this time we will not disclose the detailed informations because prosecutors have yet to file any charges against the teenager. A lot of questions are swirling around the neighborhood in the ... Campaign Analysis It looks like this is it. Barack Obama, a Senator from Illinois, is poised to win the Democratic nomination for president. Yes, Hillary Clinton is still fighting and could end up winning, but let's look at the facts. Obama has gone undefeated against Clinton in every primary and caucus since Super Tuesday -- Nebraska, Louisiana, Washington, Maine, Maryland, Virginia,... Today Kirkwood reopened its city hall. But it wasn't business as usual. The sign on the door made that obvious. Special hours were posted to accomodate people needing to attend the funerals of their friends and co-workers. It's heartbreaking to think that in the midst of the mourning they must carry on. But these workers are doing just that. I met some honorable people today who talked of doing their jobs and carrying on because that's jus... You probably drive by them and even on them. They’re supposed to keep you safe. Like a snake in the grass we pass them, but don’t notice them until they pop up one day and bite. And these little boogers can really bite. ... It was such a nice gesture on the part of the players for Vianney and Kirkwood to wear the shirts showing their support for Kirkwood during the warm up before their game Monday night. I was told that this happened when students at Vianney wanted to do something before the game and the idea of the two rivals in Kirkwood wearing the same shirts turned out to be the perfect tribute. In the wake of the shooting in Kirkwood on Thursday hundreds have made it a point visit City Hall to pay their respects; many people left flowers and hung signs to show support for those who lost their lives that day. We now know that the gunman killed two Police Officers, the Public Works Director and two City Council Members. In the past few days, I've visited Kirkwood at least 6 times, and each time that we drive by City Hall I'm struck by... One day after a fire destroyed their home and everything inside, three children from Granite City are still in a St. Louis area hospital. It's that time of the year when YOU or someone YOU know is battling that nasty, achy FLU-BUG! If you've had it or is currently fighting it, then St. Louis County Health officials say you have a lot of company. The day before Super Tuesday, the campaign workers for the leading Democratic candidates are feeling the pinch. ... |
