20 minutes and too many distracted drivers for comfort. Most of us have picked up a cell phone while driving to make that call that just can't wait. But when I hear the statistics and stories about what can happen, it makes me rethink dialing. As a busy mom, I'm usually trying to do more than just drive my minivan. But today I spent 20 minutes on the side of a highway with an Illinois State Trooper. He showed me drivers who were not paying attention. Some were eating. Others were talking on the phone or texting. Per the trooper, it takes a person a second and a half to realize he or she needs to make a decision and do something different. Driving on the highway a car travels 100 feet per second. I realized, in just one second, their perfectly controlled cars could go out of control and they could crash. Illinois lawmakers are debating several laws on how to prosecute distracted drivers. One problem with that, who admits to driving while texting or talking on the cell? |
