Taking a pic or having yours taken, is as easy as pushing a button on a cell phone. An Illinois school district thinks that's too easy. The school board in the Highland, Illinois School District recently approved a new policy that restricts students from taking pictures at school with their cell phones, without prior consent. The purpose of the policy is to prevent someone from snapping a photo that could be used to embarrass, harass or intimidate a fellow student or a teacher. I talked with some students at Highland High School, who told me they rarely take pictures at school with their cell phones. But they said many students carry a digital camera and take pictures at school with it. In fact, the day we were at the school, a student said she'd taken photos of a couple of students who fell asleep in economics class. The district wants to make sure students don't use pictures like that to get someone in trouble or have them posted on a MySpace website where many others could have the opportunity to tease them. The policy should put a stop to those kinds of snapshots because it covers cell phones and any electronic devices. It's important to note that these new policies will go on the books, right after the current policy which states that students are not allowed to use their cell phones for any reason between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. |
