The recent rash of recalled toys that are tainted with lead, is complicating the efforts by charities to operate toy drives this year. But there is a simple solution. Millions of toys that were made in China have been recalled this year. One toy was recalled recently because it contained a chemical that could break down to the date rape drug, if it was swallowed. Usually the focus during toy drives is on getting the popular toys that kids want and getting enough to distribute to the families who have signed up for help. This year volunteers at charities are, like Santa, making a list and checking it twice to be sure none of the recalled toys is given to a needy child. Some charities have had to temporarily delay toy drives until they can recruit enough volunteers to check all the toys. If you go to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website and print out the list of recalled toys, it'll take 13 pages of paper. And what happens if a toy is added to the list after it's been donated and checked out as okay? There's a solution to the problem, but it's not as fun or cuddly as donating a toy. Give a gift card. It avoids the lead risk and lets the recipient pick out the gift that they really want. |
