Two years ago this month, we first heard the chilling headlines of a six year old girl from Spanish Lake in North St. Louis County being kidnapped from her frontyard, and then later found severely beaten and sexually assaulted about 200 feet from her home.
How horrible the crime; even more so, to later learn that the accused attacker, who would later admit to the vicious attack, was only 13 years old! My God, I have nephews his age, I know children who are that youg, and to think today a judge sentenced Sherman Burnett, Jr. to 60 years in prison.
Burnett, now 15, is still the centerpiece of many conversations among parents in that Spanish Lake neighborhood.
One neighbor I spoke to perhaps, said it best when she in a soft voice said, "I had to admit it, but I think he deserves it." "What he did to that child was horrible, and children must learn when they commit such violent crimes, they too, no matter what their age, must pay the consequences."
I agree with several parents in that community that you must feel bad for both children and both families. Any comments, please, let me know your thoughts.
