The closing of I-64/Highway 40 will be felt far and wide. MODOT says the decision to close portions of I-64/Highway 40 during reconstruction is based on the fact that the alternate routes can handle most of the traffic and the fixed budget for the project demands that MODOT try to get as much bang for the buck when it rebuilds the highway. Traffic engineers at MODOT estimate that it would take 6 years to finish the project if one lane in each direction was left open during the reconstruction of Highway 40. Plus, the longer the project takes the more costs are going to rise because of inflation. Does that justify shutting down an interstate that runs through the heart of the metro? Not to Missouri State Representative Scott Muschany of Frontenac who plans to introduce a bill in the state legislature that would prevent closing a major highway for more than 60 days. Highway 40 will probably be closed and several overpasses torn down by the time it comes up for a vote. I'm one of the many motorist who use Highway 40 regularly and I too, am nervous about life after it closes. Look for me on I-44, I'll be the guy playing the soothing music and chanting "Serenity Now! Serenity Now!" |
