U-City Man Has Something to Tell, Even if You Don't Ask

7:07 PM Fri, Nov 30, 2007 |

There's a new effort to get rid of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the military. Wherever you stand on gays in the military, Rob Schwitz call tell you, first hand, about the impact the policy has had.

What to do about the levees?

5:16 PM Thu, Nov 29, 2007 |

In the St. Louis District there are 89 levees (39 in Missouri and 50 in Illinois). So far the U.S. Corps of Engineers has completed in depth inspections of 9 of the levees and ruled that they were all deficient. The group sighted problems like risk of failure. A representative with the Corps of Engineers says they do have plans to fix the levees and are waiting for the funding to come through so that they can fix any issues as soon a...

The drive to work will take longer, the only real question is how much longer.

7:54 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

The closing of I-64/Highway 40 will be felt far and wide. MODOT says the decision to close portions of I-64/Highway 40 during reconstruction is based on the fact that the alternate routes can handle most of the traffic and the fixed budget for the project demands that MODOT try to get as much bang for the buck when it rebuilds the highway.

Just how good are U.S. spy satellites?

7:50 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

I could show you, but then I'd have to shoot you. No, seriously there are more than 3,000 government employees in St. Louis who know precisely how powerful our nation's spy satellite are. They use them everyday.

Are Electric Blankets Fire Hazards?

8:19 PM Tue, Nov 27, 2007 |

A Missouri woman's death is blamed on a brand new electric blanket. Her daughter reported seeing flames leaping from the blanket wrapped around her mother. Millions of electric blankets are sold every year. Do you have one of them?

What would you do without your cell phone?

10:46 PM Tue, Nov 20, 2007 |

On 9/11 the volume of calls from people trying to reach loved ones was so high that it overwhelmed cell networks in New York and prevented many calls from getting through. Cell networks have been upgraded since then, but it doesn't take an emergency the size of 9/11 to jam cell networks and it's happened since then in St. Louis.

Don't be paranoid, but someone's watching you.

7:48 PM Tue, Nov 20, 2007 |

Microchips are used in calculators, digital cameras and in factory equipment used to make potato chips. Retailers are also starting to use them in clothing. Why would they put them in a shirt or skirt and what would they do? Those are some of the questions that have earned them the nickname, "spychips."

THE SHOOTING OF A FIVE YEAR OLD

12:36 PM Tue, Nov 20, 2007 |

I'm just sickened by the shooting of five year old Tyris Jones. In case you missed it, it happened Saturday night at the Dawson Manor apartment complex in the 1800 block of Russell in East St. Louis. The little boy was asleep in his second floor bedroom when a stray bullet ripped through a wall in hit Tyris in his chest.

During an exclusive interview with News 4 Monday, the boy's great-grandmother tol...

TWO YEARS LATER: TEEN SENTENCED FOR ATTACK

2:39 PM Thu, Nov 15, 2007 |

Two years ago this month, we first heard the chilling headlines of a six year old girl from Spanish Lake in North St. Louis County being kidnapped from her frontyard, and then later found severely beaten and sexually assaulted about 200 feet from her home.
How horrible the crime; even more so, to later learn that the accused attacker, who would later admit to the vicious attack, was only 13 years old! M...

Deer Jumps Into Car

10:29 PM Tue, Nov 13, 2007 |

This is as strange as it is frightening. No one seems to know what happened to the deer after this incident. We're told it found its way out and ran off. One more interesting note, the deer jumped into the side of the SUV where Judy Zielinski's granddaughter sits when she drives her on Wednesdays, but this accident happened on Thursday.

Kevin Johnson Gets Death Penalty

7:51 PM Sun, Nov 11, 2007 |

When the second Kevin Johnson trial got underway I was assigned the story. I was in the courtroom for the jury selection but I was looking for an additional story. I had found a website in defense of Kevin Johnson. There was also an on-line company that sold "Justice for Sergeant William McEntee" items such as sweatshirts, mugs, bumper stickers etc. I contacted both websites to ask if those responsible for the sites would agree to intervie...

You Dirty Rat!

11:48 PM Thu, Nov 08, 2007 |

What is it about rats that make people so uncomfortable? Some people invite them into their homes as pets. Others cringe at the mere mention of the creepy critters.

One Year Later: KeyAndra's Family Speaks

11:01 AM Thu, Nov 08, 2007 |

This week News 4 exclusively reported that St.Louis Police finally had a suspect in mind in connection with the murder of 16 year old KeyAndra Jackson. Last November 1st, the teenager was found dead in a dumpster in north St. Louis. A number of questions still surround this tragic case.
KeyAndra's mother and sister spoke exclusively with News 4. For me, it was indeed a difficult and draining intervi...

STL Deputy Shot

10:07 PM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

Deputy Christopher Day considers himself lucky and when you hear the story that's the only word that comes to mind. Somehow, someway, that bullet slowed down enough to just graze Day and he and his collegues at the Sheriff's Dept. are amazed. He says he feels fine and was right back at work on Wednesday. He was even joking that he should test his luck with some lottery tickets.

The Hug Felt 'Round the World

3:49 PM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

I just got off the phone with a producer at CBS News in New York. She called me for help covering a story the network is planning. I frequently assist the network radio and television broadcasts when major news happens in the St. Louis region.

You know. Big stories.

Tornado Strikes. Kidnapped Boys Found Alive. Cardinals Win World Series. Passenger Train Derails.

Big stories with worldwide appeal.

This time...

Residents in Richmond Heights sue MetroLink for foundation cracks

5:38 PM Tue, Nov 06, 2007 |

When Metro began tunneling behind the 1200 block of Buck Avenue in Richmond Heights to build the cross county extension, homeowners along the stretch say the track hoes used to break up the bedrock, also broke up their foundations.

Motorcycle Gangs

4:53 PM Tue, Nov 06, 2007 |

News 4 has received several emails from viewers about motorcycle gangs terrorizing drivers on roadways throughout the area. We've covered several stories, including one in Soulard. One thing a driver said was the logo some of the bikers were wearing looked like Streetfighterz. So I contacted that stunt team. Co-founder, James Vaughn, agreed to talk with me. We both agreed something needed to be done to make it clear what Streetfighterz is and...

Railroad Crossings

5:18 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007 |

I worked on a story today about a man who is now in critical condition after he drove onto railroad tracks in St Charles County and got hit by a train. The accident happened at Twin Rivers road, when I was out there today I noticed that the intersection did not have any warning lights or guards. What do you think about that? I spoke with an official from county and he told me that if residents want more protection at railroad crossing they ...

Granite City Child Found

10:36 PM Fri, Nov 02, 2007 |

It is nice to cover a story with a happy ending, and seeing 11 month old Alijah being returned to his mother was as happy an ending as I'll see as a reporter.
It is also good to see how effective the SARRA (St. Louis. Area Regional A.M.B.E.R. Alert) alert system works.
The alert was posted for a hour and half at all area police agencies when the green pick up truck was spotted and stopped by Madison Police at ...

Barack Obama: Confident he can win

5:23 PM Fri, Nov 02, 2007 |

Despite New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's lead in the race to become the Democratic presidential nominee, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is still sounding confident.

Speaking today at the Clarendon County Courthouse in a rural area near Charleston, S.C., Obama told a crowd:

''I've heard that some folks aren't sure America is ready for an African-American president, so let me be clear: I never would have begun this campaign if I weren...

Planning for the 64/40 shutdown

3:47 PM Fri, Nov 02, 2007 |

Alternative transportation for the shut down of Highway 40/I-64 is just that, an alternative. It might not be the best option but it gives commuters something else to consider. A co-worker here at Channel 4 was plotting her commute, if she took Metro. Turns out her 25 minute drive down Highway 40 now would stretch into an hour and a half using the bus/metro plan.

Fresh Batteries and Loud Noises

7:08 PM Thu, Nov 01, 2007 |

When you set your clock back for Daylight Savings Time, it's time to change the batteries in your smoke detector. Those safety devices are awfully loud. But we tested smoke detectors and found that some are louder than others and some sound their alarm quicker than others. Knowing which ones work better than others is very important information for protecting your family. That is, unless you don't plan to change any batteries this weekend beca...
