Who in the world would take the job as attorney for Michael Devlin and why? While taping an edition of the KMOV public affairs program, "Extra Edition," (airdate 10/13 @ 9:30 am) both the attorneys who represent Michael Devlin were in the studio along with the FBI special agent who heads the Devlin Task Force. It was interesting to stand back and note the professionalism and courtesy among the men who could be characterized as adversaries. We spent nearly 10 minutes of the program interviewing attorneys, Michael Kielty and Ethan Corlija. They explained that they were called by Devlin's family and asked to take Michael's case. They talked about how they took the case to ensure that the rights of a man, who was later described as a 'monster,' were protected. Plus, they were motivated to take the case on behalf of Michael Devlin's parents, who they describe as great people who were also victims. They soon realized that the evidence was overwhelming and didn't try to come up with an, "if it doesn't fit, you must acquit" style of defense to get Devlin off the charges. They talked about death threats, the atrocities committed by Devlin and the courage and perseverance of Shawn Hornbeck. Michael Kielty said he wanted to make sure the process was fair and transparent on behalf of their client, the way the constitution sets it out. Ethan Corlija called Shawn Hornbeck a 'hero' for his efforts to protect Ben Ownby. Other attorney's might criticize aspects of the way they handled the case, but you can't fault Michael Devlin's attorney's for being forthright about the most difficult case of their careers. |
