Is the NFL's TV blackout of Rams football in St. Louis good business?

3:19 PM Wed, Oct 10, 2007 |

I'm a Rams fan. I like going to games, cheering with the crowd. As a reporter here in St. Louis, I've covered two Super Bowls. (The assignment was more fun when we won.) Despite the team's poor showing so far this season, I still enjoy watching the Rams on TV just like hundreds of thousands of St. Louis fans. Last Sunday, you could watch the Rams on TV in Phoenix but not in St. Louis. More than 50,000 fans had purchased tickets, but the game wasn't a sellout. A few thousand really bad seats remained unsold, so the entire St. Louis region had to suffer. Even paying satellite and cable customers couldn't watch the game on TV. The network gave us another game, torturing us with a couple of Rams highlights during the halftime show and gut-wrenching scoring updates with announcers pointing out how exciting the St. Louis game is this week. To what end? Will you rush down to the dome and pay the Rams full price for overpriced-upper-deck-back-of-the-end-zone seats? Will anyone? Just ask for the "OUDBOTEZ Seats" when ordering your tickets. If not, go to the dome an hour before the game and buy a ticket on the street for below face value, maybe even for half price. It's totally legal.
