Cherokee Street is getting a pick me up

5:20 PM Wed, Oct 17, 2007 |

There is good news for anyone who remembers the hay day of Cherokee Street in the South St Louis. City leaders just voted to pump millions into the area to fix it up; in the hope of bring it back to life. I spent the day talking to people in the area about the expected revitalization and nearly everyone seems excited.

Who is paying for it? The plan is to use federal highway funds ($1,106,000) and money from a half-cent city sales tax from the City of St Louis ($ 294,000) to pay for the rest.

What are they going to do? Basically make it esthetically pleasing; the money would be used to for repair sidewalks, landscape, adding lighting, benches and bike racks.

We don't know when all the work will get started, but Alderman Craig Schmid told me this is a long over due project and he is pleased city leaders finally gave it the OK.
