Immigration Raid, Day 2

5:26 PM Wed, Oct 31, 2007 |

Yesterday News 4 was the only station on the scene when local and federal authorities broke up what they allege is a counterfeit document ring.
Three Mexican men, in this country illegally, are now facing charges of making and selling fake green cards, driver's licenses, and social security cards. Fifteen others were taken into custody not on criminal charges, but for being in this country illegally.
They'll probably be deported, ...

SAGGY PANTS LAW? PULL UP OR PAY UP

10:35 AM Wed, Oct 31, 2007 |

You've probably seen them at local malls, schools, anywhere you walk outside they're there in full view---teenage boys wearing their pants below their wastelines.
What's up with that? It still boggles my mind even after reporting on this story on Tuesday, October 30th.
My photographer, Gary Womack, and I just couldn't stop talking about what kids nowadays call "a fun, fashion statement."
Most will agree when you see...

BOGUS GREEN CARD RING BUSTED BY POLICE

3:35 PM Tue, Oct 30, 2007 |

News Four learned today Maryland Heights police and Federal Immigration and Customs enforcement agents have broken up a counterfeit green card ring. It's unclear at this point how long this ring had been operating, but so far 19 arrests have been made. I was suprised today to find the "green card" operation was going on in a very quiet corner of Chesterfield, an apartment on Rialto Drive. Neighbors tell me they had no idea, but did see al...

To Pursue or Not to Pursue

Mother of 11: Sadie Perkins

I meet with one of Sadie Perkins' daughters today following the news of her mother's death.

According to police, the 71 year old died early Friday morning in a car accident following a police purist.

Perkins' daughter, Donna, told me that her mother was on her way to a local casino with her close friends, when trying to get away from police 27 year old Thomas Williams hit the SUV she was ...

St. George Mayor Resigns

5:11 PM Fri, Oct 26, 2007 |

St. George Mayor, Harold Goodman, resigned today after St. Louis County Police arrested him last night on suspicion of possessing child pornography. He wasn't their intended target when the investigation started.
Searching down suspected child porn predators is like following the cracks in a piece of glass. One small rock hits the glass to cause a break. Then the glass begins to splinter. Those cracks spread and weaken the entire p...

Where Is Kosovo? Do We Still Have Troops There?

11:54 PM Wed, Oct 24, 2007 |

No, those aren't the answers given to Alex Trebek on a recent episode of Jeopardy. They are two common questions people asked when I told them about the Missouri Army National Guard's preparations to ship out to Kosovo in the state's largest single unit deployment since WWI.

Off-Duty Officer Saves the Day

2:01 PM Tue, Oct 23, 2007 |

So many times we hear about people being at the wrong place at the wrong time; however, on Saturday October 20, 2007 an off duty officer from California was at the right place at the right time. According to police in Bellville, Carlsbad Officer Matt Lowe stopped a man from stabbing a woman to death. Investigators say Lowe was in town for a wedding, and while on his way to the celebration he saw the crime and he got involved. This story is a t...

State withholds photos of escaped teen criminals

8:32 PM Mon, Oct 22, 2007 |

Tim Decker, the director of Missouri's Division of Youth Services, says it is illegal for the state to release photos of teens who escaped from a high-security facility in a North St. Louis neighborhood.

Decker says all of the teens have committed felonies.

Should photos be released to help find the fugitives, or is protecting their privacy more important?

Body Worlds 3 comes to town

9:26 AM Fri, Oct 19, 2007 |

Body Worlds 3 uses a process called plastination to take human remains and turn them into something that doesn't rot. When you visit the exhibit, if you visit the exhibit, you'll hear the words polymers and all kinds of fancy science terms to explain how it's done. Morality aside, the science behind making the exhibit happen is astounding. Many people don't think human remains should be used as a display. Others see Body Worlds as a great ...

Problem Property

4:36 PM Thu, Oct 18, 2007 |

When St. Louis County Police responded to the death of an 8-month-old girl they found the conditions the family members were living in made the home "uninhabitable." Conditions were that bad. While police conduct their investigation the county is now also looking into the home.

The St. Louis County Public Works department has a special unit for "Problem Properties." We interviewed David Wrone with Public Works and Aaron Tossey, an ...

Cherokee Street is getting a pick me up

5:20 PM Wed, Oct 17, 2007 |

There is good news for anyone who remembers the hay day of Cherokee Street in the South St Louis. City leaders just voted to pump millions into the area to fix it up; in the hope of bring it back to life. I spent the day talking to people in the area about the expected revitalization and nearly everyone seems excited.

Who is paying for it? The plan is to use federal highway funds ($1,106,000) and money from a half-cent city sales t...

Wounded Warriors Get Royal Treatment at Local Stopover

7:33 PM Mon, Oct 15, 2007 |

You see a story on the CBS Evening News about a mortar attack at Camp Victory in Baghdad, or read a short story in the newspaper about a roadside bomb in Mosul and wonder, what happens to those wounded soldiers, marines and airmen? I saw for myself what happens to them and I can tell you they're in good hands.

Michael Devlin's Attorneys

7:39 PM Fri, Oct 12, 2007 |

Who in the world would take the job as attorney for Michael Devlin and why?
Those are the questions I asked and you might be surprised by the answers.

SIUE Student Saved

10:13 PM Thu, Oct 11, 2007 |

The way his fellow students and his teacher saved Jason Batty at S.I.U.E. shows how important it is for all of us to know about the portable defibrillators or AED's that are now in many public places, including schools and in the workplace.
It helps to take notice where they are and how they work, although the instructions on them are very clear and I was told it was easy to operate even for people who hadn't trained ...

A Conversation with Pam and Craig Akers

If you could ask Shawn Hornbeck's parents any question, what would you ask?
My list was long and covered a lot of ground.

Is the NFL's TV blackout of Rams football in St. Louis good business?

3:19 PM Wed, Oct 10, 2007 |

I'm a Rams fan. I like going to games, cheering with the crowd. As a reporter here in St. Louis, I've covered two Super Bowls. (The assignment was more fun when we won.) Despite the team's poor showing so far this season, I still enjoy watching the Rams on TV just like hundreds of thousands of St. Louis fans. Last Sunday, you could watch the Rams on TV in Phoenix but not in St. Louis. More than 50,000 fans had purchased tickets, but the ...

Bank Computer Hackers

10:50 PM Tue, Oct 09, 2007 |

One interesting aspect to this story about the hacker who got into the Commerce Bank system is that it's believed the hacker or hackers are in Eastern Europe and part of some organized crime ring that tried to steal US credit card numbers. It seems doubtful these people will be caught, but banks try to do all they can to stop them.

Hannah Montana....Take Notes!

9:17 PM Sat, Oct 06, 2007 |

If you have kids you're probably well aware of this story...and if you don't there's a good chance you've heard about it too--it's everywhere! Teen singer Hannah Montana a.k.a. Miley Cyrus is coming to St. Louis. Tickets sold out in an insanely short amount of time here, as they did in cities across the country. Fan club members got them, scalpers got them, lots of people got them. But lots more did not and that's made for thousands of hea...

Charges Dropped Against Delea Payne

2:52 PM Fri, Oct 05, 2007 |

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce has dropped the misdemeanor case against Delea Payne.

In a statement, Joyce said: "At the time Ms. Payne was charged, the evidence indicated that she was solely responsible for the children on her van. After interviewing additional witnesses and reviewing the other evidence, we have learned that there were multiple people responsible for the children on those vans, and they did not clearly com...

They're called "flyovers" and soon you can be one of the "pilots" who use them.

6:30 PM Wed, Oct 03, 2007 |

The clumps of wet cement came pouring out at a rapid pace. Then slowly and steadily, a large yellow machine with two front legs followed behind, to smooth the cement into a brand new roadway.

PAYNE, PAYNE, PAYNE

5:34 PM Mon, Oct 01, 2007 |

AS OF LATE, PRACTICALLY EVERY WHERE I GO, PEOPLE STOP AND ASK ME ABOUT THE HIGH-PROFILE CASE OF "DELEA PAYNE." YOU'LL REMEMBER SHE'S THE 25 YEAR OLD DAYCARE DIRECTOR, FROM FERGUSON, WHO'S MADE NEWS HEADLINES FOR WEEKS NOW.
PAYNE'S CHARGED WITH A MISDEMEANOR COUNT OF CHILD ENDANGERMENT AFTER LEAVING A TWO YEAR OLD BOY ALONE IN A SWELTERING VAN DURING A FIELD TRIP.
TODAY NEWS FOUR WAS THE ONLY NEWS CREW COVERING THE MEE...
