I was walking with my kids yesterday afternoon when I noticed swarms of mosquitoes. It was three o'clock in the afternoon and I was reaching for the DEET. I was surprised how aggressive the insects were and how many were attacking us. I called a few local health departments this morning to find out what's going on. One expert says it's "operation normal", which means unpredictable. Usually at this time the swarms are starting to die off. Not this year. In late August and early September we suffered through some extreme heat. Mosquitoes love heat and water. I'm told warm temperatures speed up their life cycle and they're more active. Not good news for us since the past few weeks have been very warm! Rain in early September helped the Flood Plain Mosquito breed. They fly up to ten miles so they're coming from everywhere. The Asian Tiger Mosquito breeds in and around our homes and sticks around. Unfortunately, experts say mosquitoes are like the weather, unpredictable. Even a brief cool snap might not wipe out the swarms. Winter is when we can really expect a break from the biting insects. |
