In the Midst of Tragedy, There Are Still Good People in the World

4:09 PM Tue, Sep 18, 2007 |

Just because I'm in the news industry, doesn't mean that I don't occasionally feel the way some of you do when you see a lot of sad, tragic, horrifying news stories. Although I have to maintain a modicum of poise and professionalism on the air, my heart breaks too when I hear that a young police officer's been shot, or when a child loses their life at the hands of another child. This morning, I was reporting on the shooting death of Bshara Kswani, a manager at a South Side neighborhood grocery store. As of this posting, police are still searching for the shooter. While his family and friends mourn his loss, I couldn't help but think about the legacy he leaves. Every single person I spoke to outside of that store talked about how "Bob" as they called him, was a generous, caring man. A man who didn't want children in the neighborhood to go hungry just because their parents may be going through a hard time. A man who let his customers take items on credit, charging them only their promise to pay later. A man who wasn't just a store clerk but who was a friend to an entire neighborhood of people. It reminds me, that with every tragedy we see, with every story that breaks our hearts, there are still good people in the world. And thank goodness for that.

What you wrote was so sweet. I wish more reporters were so caring about their work and the people they cover. thank you.

Many times reporters/anchors seem uncaring and unfazed by the news that pulls at the average citizen's heartstrings. It is so refreshing to know that you haven't become jaded and apathetic towards the news that you report.
Keep up the good work Erica!
