There's a war that's being fought right now that you've probably never heard about. Some of the soldiers on the front lines in that war are stationed at Scott Air Force Base. And the Department of Homeland Defense has finally released video that shows the potential damage that the enemy they're battling, can do. The Department of Homeland Defense released http://www.kmov.com/video/topvideo-index.html?nvid=178885&shu=1 video of a simulated hacker attack on the U.S. power grid. The hacker was able to seize control of an industrial electric turbine and destroy it. Your eyes have probably glazed over when you've heard terms like, "cyber war" and "cyber attacks," but this video does a good job of illustrating what those terms are all about. Since electric and communications systems do not operate in isolation, their connection to the outside world makes them potentially vulnerable to attempts by individual hackers or foreign governments who might try to remotely access those systems and damage them. Now, enter the http://public.afca.af.mil/ Air Force Communications Agency, based at Scott Air Force Base, east of St. Louis. That's where some of the nation's cyber warriors are working to defeat these types of attacks, especially by protecting communications and computer systems. They have some very smart people there who develop the secure networks and the programs that protect them from intrusion. One of the reason's the U.S. military is the strongest in the world is because of its hi-tech capabilities, which can also be a vulnerability. The men and women at the AFCA at Scott Air Force Base are the people on guard duty in today's electronic battleground. |
