It's hard to believe that kids, under the age of five, are out and running around in the dark. What's even harder to imagine is a parent letting a child do that. St Louis City Alderman, Craig Schmid, says he's heard complaints during community meetings where residents want something done about the unsupervised young kids out on the streets... some wearing diapers. He believes a stricter curfew can help. Kids under five must be in by 8PM. Kids 6-11 must be home by 11PM during the week. Schmid knows that no five year old can tell the difference between 8 PM and 9 PM. Parents can so he's proposing penalties for them, if a child is caught after curfew. I've heard of kids being caught in the crossfire during a gang shootout or an 11 year old getting stabbed during a fight and I think, why isn't that child at home in bed? Schmid knows he can't stop all crime with a curfew. But a child at home is usually safer than one wandering alone on the streets. It breaks my heart that laws like this must exist to protect kids. One resident said it's hard to believe something that's common sense must be debated and passed as law. Schmid is still waiting to see that happen. St. Louis City residents will get their say during upcoming committee meetings. |
