Ivory Theatre

10:09 PM Fri, Sep 28, 2007 |

Putting the controversy aside regarding the musical, the transformation of this church into a theatre is remarkable. Some of the residents in the neighborhood also seem very impressed. Some very creative thinking went into making this building a theatre and maybe a little creative thinking into picking "Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll" for the first show.

Cyber Warriors in Your Backyard

8:22 PM Thu, Sep 27, 2007 |

There's a war that's being fought right now that you've probably never heard about. Some of the soldiers on the front lines in that war are stationed at Scott Air Force Base. And the Department of Homeland Defense has finally released video that shows the potential damage that the enemy they're battling, can do.

Mosquito Problems

5:42 PM Thu, Sep 27, 2007 |

I was walking with my kids yesterday afternoon when I noticed swarms of mosquitoes. It was three o'clock in the afternoon and I was reaching for the DEET. I was surprised how aggressive the insects were and how many were attacking us.

The Strength of a Mother

5:02 PM Thu, Sep 27, 2007 |

It amazes me sometimes just how willing people are to open up their lives to reporters. Don't get me wrong, as a reporter I want people to talk to me....I need them to. However, there are times when the burden someone is bearing is just so great that I can't imagine they have the strength to talk about it. Selina Burgess is one of those people. A 3 vehicle crash at Kingshighway and McRee left Selina's 29 year old daughter Tawanda, 27 year...

Could tax breaks benefit baseball fans?

4:24 PM Wed, Sep 26, 2007 |

Just wondering about this.
The city and state are providing the Cardinals with hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks for the new stadium and Ballpark Village. Few fans are complaining about this. But I often hear fans complain ownership isn't spending enough money on team payroll. Is there any way the deal could be restructured so that some of the millions in tax breaks would have to be directed to free agent acquisitions...

Shotgun Assault on Unborn Child

3:58 PM Wed, Sep 26, 2007 |

We had heard through a source that a pregnant woman had been shot. We didn't know the extent of her injuries. I went with my photographer to the woman's neighborhood, an apartment complex in north St. Louis County. The story we uncovered was more horrific than we had originally anticipated. The woman's live-in boyfriend is charged with taking a sawed-off shotgun, placing it against the woman's stomach and pulling the trigger. The unb...

GM, UAW close to deal to end strike

8:38 PM Tue, Sep 25, 2007 |

(As of this writing, the Associated Press is reporting that both sides are close to a contract deal to end the strike.)

Confidence and fear are having a tug of war. In Wentzville, Mo., you can see it on the picket lines. It's the first national United Auto Workers strike against General Motors since 1970. It's the strike no on wanted. At least, that's what company officials and union leaders say. With 73,000 workers off th...

Curfew debate

5:11 PM Tue, Sep 25, 2007 |

It's hard to believe that kids, under the age of five, are out and running around in the dark. What's even harder to imagine is a parent letting a child do that. St Louis City Alderman, Craig Schmid, says he's heard complaints during community meetings where residents want something done about the unsupervised young kids out on the streets... some wearing diapers.

MASKED ROBBERS ON THE RUN

10:59 AM Mon, Sep 24, 2007 |

Today, I'm working on the police search for two, bold robbers, who were wearing SKI MASKS AND SUNGLASSES when they approached a man yesterday outside a BOB EVANS restaurant in Fairview Heights.
It happened in broad daylight around 3pm Sunday at the restaurant located on 10 ludwig drive off Illinois Route 159. Police tell me one of the suspects threatened a restaurant manager with a knife. Luckily, the man wasn't hurt. ...

Much to do about a Fence

5:42 PM Fri, Sep 21, 2007 |

Ryan Hunt contacted News Four looking for help; two years ago he put up a fence using surveyor Charles Haskins measurements. In the end he found out that the numbers were wrong and the fence on his neighbor’s property. That’s when the neighbor, Verna Zellers, filed a lawsuit to get the fence moved, damages, and lawyer fees. Eventually surveyor Haskins agreed he was at fault and would take care of everything. Sigh. Not too fast. Months la...

A COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER

11:01 AM Wed, Sep 19, 2007 |

A "TRUE COMMUNITY" COMES TOGETHER

In the wake of this week's fatal shooting and robbery of Bsharra Kswani, at Suzy's Market and Deli in the 7600 block of Ivory in South St. Louis, residents in that neighborhood are pouring out their hearts, pockets and souls to the victim's family.
While covering this horrible story, I've seen a heartfelt, caring community really try to come together and support M...

In the Midst of Tragedy, There Are Still Good People in the World

4:09 PM Tue, Sep 18, 2007 |

Just because I'm in the news industry, doesn't mean that I don't occasionally feel the way some of you do when you see a lot of sad, tragic, horrifying news stories. Although I have to maintain a modicum of poise and professionalism on the air, my heart breaks too when I hear that a young police officer's been shot, or when a child loses their life at the hands of another child. This morning, I was reporting on the shooting death of Bshara K...

Theft at police HQ looks like inside job

2:12 PM Tue, Sep 18, 2007 |

Despite pressure from the St. Louis police department, the Post-Dispatch reported the theft of "perhaps $40,000 or more" from the evidence vault at police headquarters downtown, forcing the department to hold a news conference and admit an "on-going" investigation that began months ago has yielded no arrests.
Later, top police officials (speaking off camera) claimed the Post's dollar figure was wrong, but they refu...

Demolition Derby Sends Four To The Hospital

12:34 AM Mon, Sep 17, 2007 |

It took my photographer and I an hour and a half to get to Potosi. Once we were there we quickly found out the talk of the town was about the 15th annual Demolition Derby. As anyone could imagine there was mixed reaction to the derby on Sunday afternoon. It was less than 24 hours since a car drove into the stands and injured four spectators. Some in the town were calling for improved safety measures. While others thought the accident wasn't ...

Highway 40 and 170

9:06 PM Fri, Sep 14, 2007 |

Just working on this story on Friday night I think I already have an idea of how the detour will go. We were stuck in traffic most of the evening. Traffic was real heavy all night with drivers going to Forest Park and Busch Stadium. This weekend will be a real test to see how drivers get onto 170. Take your time, and map out a new route or you may be sitting in traffic.

Voting with their Cigarettes

6:03 PM Fri, Sep 14, 2007 |

St. Louisans continue to resist smoking bans--including those NOT imposed by local governments. A few months ago I was in a Central West End pub and ran into a guy I know but who I'd never seen there. I used to see him all the time in the bar at Balaban's, the well-known CWE restaurant and bar. He said he was boycotting Balaban's because the new owners had banned all smoking. And he said other longtime customers who smoked had stopped goi...

Woman says she lost her job because she's Muslim

3:39 PM Thu, Sep 13, 2007 |

I met Marium Soultan at 11am this morning. She told me Client Services (a collection agency) in St Charles let her go after three days because she refused to take off her head scarf. Soultan claimed she couldn't work with out it because wearing a scarf is an integral part of her religion. What does the company have to say? I spoke with Client Services' attorney by phone, and he told me the company's policy states that employees can not wea...

Law Degree on Ebay

10:31 PM Wed, Sep 12, 2007 |

This story seemed odd right from the start, but Martirez really is trying to sell his law degree. For anyone thinking about it, he can sell his degree, but it does not give anyone a license to practice law, the degree has Martirez's name on it, and only he can use it. Not only did he finish law school, but he also passed the bar exam.

Railroad Bridges

10:43 PM Tue, Sep 11, 2007 |

Sometimes the stories I work on give me the chance to get a history lesson. The MacArthur Bridge downtown actually carried cars on its upper level and trains on the lower level until 1981 when the upper level was closed. The bridge was owned by the City of St. Louis until 1989 when the city swapped the MacArthur for the Eads Bridge with the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis.

St. George Police Video

10:30 PM Mon, Sep 10, 2007 |

I hope viewers get a chance to see the entire video on kmov.com. It's impossible for us to do that during the news, but it's good the website can allow us to show it.
As I mentioned on the 10 pm news, I found it interesting that the driver Brett Darrow also video taped an encounter with a St. Louis County Police officer at a DUI checkpoint back in December.
Sgt. Kuehnlein says he will tell his side, when he can, so...

What's going on in the Street Department?

4:48 PM Mon, Sep 10, 2007 |

This is my second day digging into this story. On Friday the Circuit Attorney's office announced felony stealing charges against four city employees for their alleged involvement in a paving scam. Then, over the weekend one of the men accused spoke out telling News 4 doing extra work on the side is common practice.

That's where I picked up the story today. Earlier this morning another city street worker came forward and wanted to ...
