My world of reality TV is turning fake right before my eyes. Everyone else knew it was happening, but I had my blinders on. If you've read this blog before, you know I'm a sucker for reality TV. So it should come as no surprise to you that I watch "The Hills" on MTV each week. As soon as the theme song starts, it's time to focus. I do not answer my phone, or do any chores, and hopefully, I've already eaten. I'm always really surprised if I get a phone call from a friend... because I'm wondering why they're not watching. It's been the same routine for the last four years now. And in that time, I've turned a blind eye to the blogs that debunk the so-called reality show. Deep down, I've known all along that the show was somewhat scripted. The lighting has always been perfect, there's always someone "dropping" in who has something juicy to say, and sometimes the girls look like they're trying to think of what they're supposed to say next. The show's stars have even admitted to the set-ups and involvement of producers. But sometimes, it's more fun to pretend. I'm like a 14 year-old-girl who says she still believes in Santa Claus. But it's finally time to face the music. The internet is abuzz with rumors about just how real the show is. Guess what? None of it is. First, there was this interview with a young man who appeared on the show as Lauren's love interest. He says producers fed him lines and set up the date for him and Lauren. He claims he spent more time talking to the booker than the reality show star herself. After that interview, the tricks of my favorite show started leaking... or pouring for that matter, all over the internet. According to the rumors, two of the show's main stars (Heidi and Audrina) don't even have a job. On the show, they're portrayed as two young women who are moving up in the entertainment industry. Well, I guess now they can put acting on their resumes. Not only this, but sources say that Lauren doesn't even live in "her apartment" on the show. Both she and Audrina supposedly have their own place together elsewhere. So her "home" is just a set. Here's the problem. What happens when something interesting happens while the cameras are rolling... and it's real? MTV has gone to such unnecessary lengths to stage meaningless parts of the show, we can't believe anything that happens. I guess I'm feeling a little burned. I'll certainly watch the show next week, but it won't be as fun. I'll probably answer the phone... well, at least during commercials. |
